Meet Pauly German

We were lucky to catch up with Pauly German recently and have shared our conversation below.

Pauly, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

In my experience, confidence and self-esteem comes by achieving things that require discipline and a long-term vision.

For example, learning a new language, getting a nice physique, playing an instrument, etc.

I’ve strengthened my confidence and self-esteem by being very disciplined in becoming the best musician that I can. That resulted in me winning competitions, awards, scholarships, and a general sense of respect from people in your field. That alone gives you a boost in your confidence. But what really solidifies it is the fact that your discipline did make you become that that you were aspiring to be. So, having the skills, you have the confidence to execute and that gives you security in yourself that you can achieve other hard things by being disciplined. That overall picture creates a perfect environment for a good, healthy self-esteem.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m originally from the Dominican Republic and from a very early age, I developed a passion for music.

That passion allowed me to set foot at very prestigious academic institutions to complete my music studies.

Currently, I teach Music Production and Media Scoring at the Frost School of Music and I also serve as the Music Director for the Symphonic Orchestra and the Worship Team at Hollywood Spanish Church.

One of the things that I get to enjoy the most when teaching at Frost is the incredible talent and music that students get to display in class. Combine that with the richness of cultural diversity and you have a great environment and community to live your passion fully.

At Hollywood Spanish Church, I love the performing aspect of it. We get to play and sing a variety of music every week with a robust ensemble composed of rhythm sections, strings, brass, and singers. We also put together seasonal orchestral concerts that bring together 80+ musicians to perform for our community. It’s really a wonderful place to be!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think these three things have impacted my journey in the best way possible:

-Developing a high level of musicianship. That means I’ve developed great music skills as a piano player, composer, arranger, producer, educator, etc.

-Developing a very strong work ethic. That means not missing deadlines, attention to details, not procrastinating, delayed gratification, organization skills, having daily goals, etc.

-Developing my interpersonal skills. That means you just want to be a nice guy to be around. That you can get along with people easily. That you can take feedback. That you’re able to communicate effectively, etc.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

I once read a quote that went something like this: Anxiety creeps in when no action is taken in things you know you need to do.

Anxiety and being overwhelmed are two different things, but I think they go hand in hand.

Because of my habit and work ethic of completing things (like a to-do list for the day), my anxiety goes down when I focus on completing some of the tasks at hand. So, that’s what I do, I get to work so that I can feel relaxed about it.

About feeling overwhelmed, I’ve learned to delegate responsibilities to other peers that are able to help. I have a very good sense of how much I’m able to handle. Once I hit that limit, I start delegating or cutting things that are not as crucial to the overall objective. That allows me to focus on fewer things and execute them to the best of my ability.
