We recently connected with Payton Brianne and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Payton, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Honestly, I think my purpose sort of found me. I didn’t wake up one day and say, “I’m going to start an animal welfare nonprofit.” It was more like a series of experiences that slowly pulled me in.
It started with rescuing my own fur babies. Seeing where they came from and how just a little bit of love completely transformed them lit something up in me. Then I started fostering and volunteering with local rescues, and I couldn’t look away. After law school, I felt this deep sense of urgency and responsibility to do more. That’s when I co-founded Compassionate Canine Society, where we rescue euth list dogs and educate the public through our Empathy for Animals program.
Every dog we save has their own story. Some are heartbreaking, some are hopeful, but all of them remind me that the world doesn’t lack love, it just lacks empathy. Compassionate Canine Society was born from that realization. It’s more than a rescue, it’s a reflection of what I believe in: second chances, purpose, and building bridges between people and animals.
So I guess my “purpose” is really about making space for dogs who’ve been thrown away and for people who need to feel like their empathy still matters.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I split my time between two very different worlds, but both center around advocating for others. By day, I’m a talent agent, helping artists in the entertainment industry find work and negotiate contracts. It’s high energy and fast paced, and I love being in their corner.
But my heart lives with the dogs. What’s been especially exciting lately is how I’ve been able to combine my two roles. I’ve started leveraging my skills as an agent to build up our nonprofit. It’s been so special being able to build partnerships and negotiate brand deals through Compassionate Canine Society’s social media platforms. The income from those collaborations directly supports the dogs so it feels like such a full circle way to use my experience.
One other way I’m using my legal background is through our new Empathy for Animals program. We’ve been running it as a pilot in schools and juvenile detention centers, but now we are working on a virtual version that will release before the end of the year!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three things that have helped me the most are:
1. Adaptability – Rescue work is never predictable. Dogs come in with medical issues, emotional trauma, or no history at all. You have to think on your feet and constantly shift gears.
2. Emotional resilience – I’ve had to learn how to keep my heart open without letting it break every day. There are hard moments in this work, and if you don’t create emotional boundaries, burnout and even depression can be very real.
3. Strategic thinking – My legal background and work as a talent agent have been unexpectedly useful here. Whether I’m negotiating a partnership deal or navigating nonprofit compliance, being able to zoom out and see the bigger picture has helped us grow sustainably.
For anyone just starting out, my advice is this: Start messy. You don’t need a perfect plan. Just take one small action, then another. Having a strong base definitely puts you in a stronger position, but don’t let that make you rigid. Allow yourself to be flexible and pivot when needed. And surround yourself with people who believe in your mission. There will be hard days, but if the work lights you up, it’s worth it.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, always! Whether it’s brands looking to collaborate on social content, local businesses who want to host adoption or fundraiser events, or individuals who want to foster, volunteer, or support our education program— we’re always open to meaningful partnerships.
We especially love working with folks who are aligned with our values: empathy, second chances, and community impact. If you’re reading this and thinking, “I might be a fit,” you probably are and we’d love to connect!
