Payton, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always seen my family work so hard. They’ve owned and operated many businesses throughout my life, and seeing the behind the scenes and what goes into making your dreams a reality is something that was always modeled for me. I was an athlete since the age of 5, and I also learned about being tough and the grit I need to have from playing softball.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a country rock singer songwriter from Texas, as well as a Nashville recording artist. Music has been my passion since I could make a sound and I picked up my first guitar when I was 10. It was an old parlor guitar that belonged to an old family friend. Because it was smaller, i carried it everywhere and just started playing. When I was 5 my mom took me to my very first concert, I got caught dancing out in the aisle by the spotlight and Carrie Underwood had me brought up on stage. We held hands and sang while the music thumped under my feet. I’ll never forget that moment with all of the faces and the lights. It was a pivotal moment in time for me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Having other seasoned artists take me under their wings has been so important to the success of my career. I could not be where I am today without people, believing in me and their willingness to help me believe in myself. I would tell anyone looking to make a career in the music industry to just always remain humble, no matter what level of the business you are at. Any time you can edify or uplift another artist publicly, do it. There are enough stages and fans for every single artist in the business. Don’t allow yourself to get competitive with other artists. Your true fans will find you and stay with you for the long-haul .
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
In the music business, as a singer songwriter, we are meant to create art. If we are overwhelmed or bogged down by the administrative side of the business, our creative side literally dies. I’m just speaking for myself, I can handle all of those things that keep the wheels turning, but my brain and my heart is geared to my artistry. I have just found it super beneficial to have a team that handles the administrative side of my business so I could stay focused on creating art and not allow the paperwork side to overwhelm me.
