We were lucky to catch up with Payton Russell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Payton, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I would say I get my resilience mostly from my mother, but I was raised by an amazing family that is very close knit. Each one of my grandparents, aunts, uncles and both of my parents shared a big part of that role in my life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Russell The Brand is an event design studio based in Kansas City, Missouri. Our creative team specializes in modern day balloon installations and backdrop designs. We work with many different types of events, from weddings, birthday celebrations, opening day events, and much more. Our job is to achieve our customers ultimate vision to create an amazing event space and to make their special event stand out! All of our creations are hand made by my team and I! We have lots of upcoming balloon installations and styled photo shoots. Lately we have had the privilege to install at the Barbie movie exhibit held at Union Station. The turn out was incredible, and I hope our team will get the opportunity to create something amazing again in that space!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In college I took many hands on art classes where we would create large installations and masterpieces out of found/foreign objects. In a way I truly believe this has helped me add certain objects into the balloons that no one else would even begin to think of doing. I was a graphic design major which greatly helped me while I was designing our companies website, as well as the outlook of our social media pages. Lastly, I have always been very social and personable with others. This has allowed me to grow my clientele in many ways possible.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My mom has been such a big support to my business from the very beginning. She’s mainly my voice of reason and keeps me calm during hectic times of the year.
