Meet Pearl Minor

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pearl Minor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Pearl, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

It took me 40 years to commit to following my Purpose, but I discovered it during my senior year of High School. I had always loved painting and drawing, my whole life. My mom still tells me stories of how, when I was a toddler, we would sit at a restaurant and draw for hours together, drawing all the customers and things we saw. Back to my Senior project, we had to pick something that served the community, and also something we were passionate about. I chose to paint a bus stop mural. My project was titled “Beautifying the World,” and I didn’t know it at the time, but this marked my first mural and put my life’s calling and purpose in Motion. Years later, during the pandemic, I led a Visual Arts and Graphic Design department at a Los Angeles Middle School, Northridge Middle School. We had a huge painting unit, and my second-year design scholars had already completed the year 1 painting course and understood the basics of value changes, monochromatic paintings, and were learning design in composition. When we returned to the classroom in a hybrid style, I needed a project that my scholars could successfully do at a social distance. An amazing and talented mural artist, David Martinez, had been beautifying our school during this time, completing over ten impactful murals and I asked him if he would be willing to partner with us to create a mural outside our art classroom. He said yes! We started with a tour around campus so the scholars could see his work and get an idea of what painting large meant, and how it could inspire and impact the people who see it. We then involved my whole community of scholars in the design phase, virtual and in person, all six classes worked together to brainstorm and develop drafts of possible designs. We then voted on the theme of our AMEM Academy and the Hollywood Hills, as we live in Los Angeles and each one of us are stars and have a beautiful and unique purpose to add to this world. We then, with the help and guidance of David Martinez and the blessing of our visionary Principal, Mr. Richard Ramos, successfully created a Mural outside our classroom. My design scholars enjoyed this proces,s and although I am not currently teaching at this school now, it holds a special place in my heart because painting alongside my Signature Studios Design Team re-ignited my own life purpose. Making Murals LLC was born in my heart.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important qualities are:
Showing Up – On time. “Opportunity Knocks to those who are already on the dance floor.” Be reliable. Opportunity is gifted to those who are present.
Have a growth mindset. – You will not always initially know how to do something, but trusting and believing that you can learn and grow over time with effort is the key to creating success.
Be willing to work hard with a positive attitude. Once you choose what you want to do, understand that it takes hard work and persistence to step by step, over time, grow your business, brand, and company. A positive attitude can be a challenge when you are doing hard work that is hard physically and mentally, over and over and over again. Keeping a positive attitude during the grind will make the journey more rewarding for you and those around you. Being pleasant to work with and willing to work to complete your project well will create returning customers, raving recommendations, and happy contractors.

Advice to help develop these skills:

1. Practice timeliness and showing up in your personal life. In areas that are meaningful to you but a little uncomfortable and challenge you in some way, for example, if you have a BBQ at the beach across town, practice giving double time for traffic and leaving your house early, then pat yourself on the back when you get there early or on time.
2. Celebrate small wins, and break down overwhelming tasks into small steps. Celebrate each step in a small way; all those wins add up. Also, get your 10,000 hours in and be willing to learn. It has been said that to become a master at something, you need 10,000 hours of practice, so if you are on hour 7,000 and you make a mistake or try something that doesn’t work, remind yourself that you are practicing. This is just part of your journey. Get those 10,000 hours, whether it’s public speaking, painting a mural, pitching your services to clients, or writing the perfect email; it all takes practice, and if you persist, you will get there. When you are living your purpose, it is worth putting in the time; walking along your path of purpose helps you get through the tough days.

3. If there is something that you do not want to do, do it anyway. Success is granted to those who are willing to do the work others are not willing to do. That said, please also stick to your morals and ethics. Be willing to be the bigger person, and do the small tasks you will one day delegate to others. Understanding the tasks you ask others to do will help you be a better leader. The positive attitude does not always come naturally. Create a playlist of affirmations and calming music to get in the right mindset when you are emotionally tough or about to have a challenging conversation.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

These past 12 months have been a time of tremendous growth and development. Although empowering through education is part of my life purpose, last year I realized this educational component needed to grow beyond teaching in a classroom. I put in my resignation for my teaching job literally 12 months ago. Since then, I have been wholeheartedly committed to learning and practicing toward my entrepreneur 10,000 hours, determined to master the Art and Business, and of Making Murals. This time last year, I was educating high school students in a classroom setting; now I am running my own Making Mural business with a complete summer line-up of clients! Over these last 12 months, I have assisted dozens of more experienced mural artists, asked questions to countless others I admire. I have a student mindset, coupled with a growth mindset. My business was officially established in 2024, and now has an official logo, tagline, website, social media presence, t-shirts, business cards, flyers, and a team of assistant artists working with me. Educating others now comes through interviews like this, and training artists eager to learn the art of mural making, both in person and online. This year is just the beginning.
