We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pedro O Estévez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pedro O below.
Pedro O, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience comes from the early experience of migrating to the United States and adapting to new environments. It’s also built through years of navigating the business world and a deep commitment to empowering the Latino community, which fuels perseverance and strength.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My work focuses on empowering the Latino community through LatinTalks, a traveling series of conversations designed to inspire, educate, and transform. LatinTalks is often referred to as the ‘Ted Talks for the Latino community’ because it brings together local Latino leaders to share their stories and solutions to challenges faced by the community. It’s exciting because it creates a platform for voices that are often underrepresented, fostering connection, growth, and empowerment.
In addition, as a partner in the fastest-growing financial services company in America, I am dedicated to teaching disadvantaged communities the importance of financial literacy and helping them create financial plans that lead to freedom and wealth creation. This mission is personal to me, as I believe financial empowerment is a key tool for breaking generational cycles of poverty and limited opportunities.
Currently, I’m expanding LatinTalks into new cities, working on my book, *”From Lies to Riches – 13 Steps to a Healthy Life,”* and continuing my commitment to philanthropy and community service.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities in my journey have been perseverance, emotional intelligence, and financial literacy.
1. Perseverance: Overcoming challenges, whether personal or professional, has been key to my success. The ability to keep moving forward despite obstacles is crucial. For those starting their journey, I advise embracing failures as learning experiences and never losing sight of your goals.
2. Emotional Intelligence: Understanding people and building strong relationships has allowed me to connect with others, especially in the Latino community. I recommend developing empathy and communication skills, as these will open doors to collaborations and opportunities.
3. Financial Literacy: Understanding the principles of money management and wealth creation has been foundational. It’s essential to learn how to manage money, invest wisely, and plan for long-term success. For those early in their journey, I suggest focusing on building a solid financial foundation and continually educating yourself in this area.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
It’s better to go all in on your strengths. Focusing on what you naturally excel at allows you to reach a higher level of mastery and success, rather than spreading yourself thin trying to improve weaknesses. Leveraging strengths builds confidence, creates momentum, and sets you apart in your field.
I truly believe in the concept of “who, not how.” It’s about leveraging the knowledge and experience of others to compress time and accelerate progress. In my journey, focusing on my strengths—entrepreneurship, public speaking, and community building—has allowed me to build companies, create platforms like LatinTalks, and make a meaningful impact in the Latino community. Instead of trying to be great at everything, I’ve focused on surrounding myself with experts who complement my skills.
This approach has been critical in my business ventures. By relying on others who excel in areas like finance and operations, I’m able to focus on growth, leadership, and strategy. This has helped me achieve more, faster, and with greater impact than if I had tried to do it all myself.
