Meet Peewee Dread

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Peewee Dread a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Peewee, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

Dred I Dread started in 1998. We became the best reggae band on the scene. This was a great time for the band and creating a sense f success. I learned to be optimistic before all of this started. In 1992, I migrated north for college. I was on the stage on day one. I knew what I wanted, but how was I to get there.
I joined a band looking for a singer 1993, and this was the best thing ever for me. I was the front man and began to make a name for myself. Then the floor fell out, the band dispersed in 1994-95, and we went our separate ways.
I was disappointed, but I knew that I had to stay on my path.
This journey took me deeper into music, I believed that I would be able to do my life’s dream. I connected with a band, Culture Stone, and I took a backup singer role. I was able to get back into music, after the breakup of my other band.
After playing a while with culture stone, I Took some opportunities to be a lead singer.
I went to an audition with one Rawle G, who was looking for a singer. At the audition, Rawle tested many singers, but wondered who that guy over there is. That guy was me. I asked to hear what I could do, and as they say, the rest was history. We began writing songs, but it was not a smooth beginning. The first emanation of dred i dread would stop and start for a few months.
One day, I was walking down the street, and came across two guys playing drums in the street. I asked them if they wanted to play at a coffee house in Dinkytown. We built up a small following, and I knew that it was time. I called rawle, and he came in and fired everybody, but me. We put out ads for musicians, got a rehearsal space, and began the journey.
No matter what happened, I knew that I had to believe I was doing the right thing. I could always see where I wanted to be, and I attached the feeling. Optimism is about the feeling, and your feelings are your reality.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My band has been around for almost 30 years, we are currently expanding into some product launches both digital and physical. We are excited about the collaboration with BBRTV and Boom Beatz Media. They have come on board and become the marketing arm of Dred I dread – this collaboration has our music and other offerings available to almost 10,000 people across roku and firetv networks as well as an app available on android and apple platforms respectively.
We are also collaborating with the company, Rasta Tease Hot and BBQ sauces unlimited inc Incorporated, to launch a jerk sauce and other items.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Honesty – be honest with yourself, because the worst person you can lie to is yourself – be comfortable with ups and downs, they are part of the deal. By employing honesty without emotion, you will be clearer on the facts of your situation

Perserverance – There were times when I thought that I wouldn’t last for long , But now I know I am able to carry on

Look inside for that invisible energy, everything you want is there, you have to know that it must rain, No rain, no flowers.
Learn to enjoy the experience for what it is , accept it , and continue your journey.

Be gentle with yourself.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents allowed to be the person I am today. They gave me the space to explore, experiment, and discover all my life. They taught how to treat others, how to live within my means, and how to cook. I learned intangible lessons that you only learn through experience. I used to work with my dad, we sold mini blinds as a side hustle.
My mother taught me how to take care of my things, so they last, and I learned to apply those lessons in my life.
I learned to be a steward in my community, and to help where I could.
I plan to continue this legacy for the rest of my life.
