We recently connected with Penny Haas and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Penny, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed confidence in practice and being. I’ve always been pretty self-aware, so that is key. There have been times that maybe I was uncertain about an outcome or response, but with practice I’ve been able to approach situations in a particular manner. Whether it’s a positive scenario or maybe something more challenging, I am able to take a step back, think, and then take action. I’m also aware that I will always be my own #1 cheerleader. Who would believe in me if I wasn’t confident in myself?!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As an event planner, I am the omniscient. Depending on what style of planning or the event need, I will be the contact booking the vendors, creating an idea and flow for the event, discussing food, beverage, entertainment ideas, all while organizing details and communicating with vendors. I help prepare and maintain budgets for events ranging in size. I inform vendors of what to expect for event days, and I run the show on site to make sure all details are in place and areas are ready for guest arrivals. I love my event profession because it is rewarding. Each event is a new project. Although they are all structured the same with a venue, a menu, a program, every event is curated to the individual need. Weddings are wholesome and happy. Corporate events are fun and big productions. Conferences are informative and engaging. I enjoy growing my company and learning about event opportunities. I like to make events easy for everyone. The goal is for my client to enjoy time with their friends, family, and guests. Let me plan so you can get back to the party!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One major piece of knowledge that impacted me most was a response regarding price. When I worked at a country club, one of the members asked how events were going, to where I replied “well, they think we’re expensive”. The member gave me a response that I will never forget: “Compared to what?”. That question clicked instantly and it’s been helpful when I create pricing packages and understand my clients and competitors.
Other than understanding price, I found it beneficial to understand people, as well as why they celebrate. Working at a country club was perfect for my social understanding and ability to host multiple functions for business professionals, nonprofits, galas, families, and community leaders. My background in hospitality, restaurants, and venues gave me prime opportunity to learn about people — since I am in the people business!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have always supported me. Both mom and dad have believed in me, never told me I couldn’t do something, and instilled a work ethic that I value as one of my top qualities. My parents loved me. There’s no way I can repay them for what they’ve taught or provided me with. I maintain my work ethic and set goals with high standards because I want to make my parents proud… no matter what age I am!
