We were lucky to catch up with Perry Foster recently and have shared our conversation below.
Perry, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
A major part of my work ethic comes from watching my parents. They ran a small mom-and-pop restaurant – seven days a week they would be hustling. It was very inspiring. Additionally, from a very early age I knew that if I was to become anywhere close to a master of my art form, I would need to dedicate significant daily time to that practice. And so I did!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a musicians and interdisciplinary artist from Arizona, based in the Hudson Valley, New York. He have been performing for most of his life, with a diverse range from pub singing to art installation. Perry couples folk, jazz, rock. and klezmer into a signature style.
I have been awarded project grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Scottsdale Public Art, and the Phoenix Art Museum. He served as artist-in-residence in the Gershwin Hotel (NYC), Whiskeytown National Park (California), and nue[box] theatre (Arizona). My ensemble won “Best Folk Album 2016” from YabYum Music.
Currently I am developing a new solo album, while composing original klezmer ballet for my new project “LETZ”.
I live with my beautiful family and my garden, and serves my community as a death doula.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. You have to show up every day for devotional art work. Be ready for when the muse appears!
2. Kindness and generosity are far greater than being cool in the scene. If you’re trying to fit into an already established scene…that scene is already dead.
3. Just don’t stop. Eventually they’ll have to notice you.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am really eager to collaborate with choreographers and dancers to take my instrumental project to the stage! Connect with me via email at [email protected]
