Meet Perry Picasshoe

We were lucky to catch up with Perry Picasshoe recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Perry, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would have to say that I get my work ethic from my parents. They are both Mexican immigrants who have worked hard for decades to provide and care for me and my siblings. They are some of the most hardworking individuals I know. They have taught me to always be hardworking and take pride in the work I create, no matter how small the task it should be handled with care and attention.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Howdy, I am a multidisciplinary artist. I mainly enjoy painting, photography, and fashion. A lot of my work deals with expressing and exploring my own personal emotions and traumas, often expressed in a magical surreal manner. Recently, I have begun to focus again on oil painting and am working on two series. The first is a continuation of a series of paintings and sculptures collectively titled “Mystic Garden”, which is meant to serve as a gateway to the world inside my head. It explores my personal history as a queer chicano of immigrant parents and how that has shaped my world. The second series is “Who am I ?” This one is a more meta and direct look into my identity and grasping something that isn’t tangible. I am excited to be able to showcase these projects someday for a solo show.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience, determination, and knowledge. The first is resilience. As an artist, you are opening up and being vulnerable to a large audience, which can be great because it allows people to relate and see a deep part of yourself. Simultaneously, you are also opening yourself up to becoming hurt and scrutinized, sometimes this can be devastating. So I’ve learned to bounce back and not let myself stay on the ground for too long. Like Rocky Balboa, I never know when to quit. For people who are just starting out, I would say to surround yourself people who actually support you and want to see you grow and succeed. This isn’t to say that you need to find people who praise the ground you walk on, they just have to be encouraging and be able to be honest with you in a way that isn’t soul crushing. Having this strong support system can help you bounce back up swiftly. The second quality that has been most impactful on my journey has been my determination. Having my eye on the prize has helped me to keep my head straight and never loose focus. Where there is a will there’s a way, and my gawd do I have a will to create. I would encourage people to find what their drive is, to find what they actually enjoy and want to do, not what they think others would want them to do. Once you find it, hold on tight and never let go. My last quality would have to be knowledge. I love love love learning new things everyday. It can be about literally anything, I don’t care I am always craving knowledge. Even something as unrelated to my work as ‘how do solar flares work’ make me excited and keep myself sense of wonder. I would love to one day go back to school and do architecture, to keep learning new skills. I would encourage everyone to get as much of an education as possible. Youtube is an insane library full of knowledge!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would absolutely love to collaborate with major fashion houses someday! My dream is to be invited to attend runway shows in Paris, Milan, Mexico, and all over the world! I am so excited to see what Pharrell will do with the house of LV and Virgil’s unfortunate passing. Should any fashion house want to reach out with me to create some cool stuff they can email me at PerryPicasshoe@gmail.com
