We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Perry Rickard. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Perry below.
Hi Perry, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
In her poem, “The Summer Day,” Mary Oliver asks, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” This quote runs circles around my brain every time I face a challenge. Diagnosed with PTSD at 19? *Insert Mary Oliver* Living on a remote island with nothing but a carry on? (True story by the way.) *Insert Mary Oliver*
Like everyone, I have faced many challenges throughout my life. Some self induced. Others completely out of my control. But the one perspective that keeps me going is the idea that I have this “one wild and precious life.” I intend to live it to the fullest, no matter what.
I sincerely don’t know where my commitment to life originates. It could be God, or the Universe, or simply because I really like swimming in the ocean and that’s enough for me to want to stay alive. Whatever its origins, one fact remains–I love life. The awareness that we are all going to leave this earth someday keeps me motivated to let things go, embrace the new day, and never see any setback as the end of the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the owner of Bluebird Organizing, a professional organizing business that helps people create calm, functional spaces that support their lives and goals. I’ve always loved the process of turning chaos into clarity—it’s incredibly rewarding to guide clients through letting go of what no longer serves them and building systems that actually work for their unique needs. Plus, there is nothing like seeing the relief and confidence that people feel when they’re back in control of their space.
Recently, I’ve expanded my services to include virtual organizing and self-paced e-courses. This new format makes it easier than ever for people to get support no matter where they are, or how busy their schedule is. If you’re interested in this new format, you can always DM me @lifeorganizerpro for a free consultation!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My top three pieces of advice? Read books, surround yourself with people who can genuinely help, and trust your gut.
It’s simple: when you’re just starting out, you won’t be the expert—so how do you grow your knowledge? You read. You connect. If you don’t yet have friends walking a similar path, that’s okay. Books are a powerful, accessible way to start educating yourself. With so many platforms available, it’s easier than ever to read or listen on the go.
And don’t feel limited to books strictly about your industry. Choose anything that builds your confidence, improves your financial literacy, or shifts your mindset. A few favorites of mine include The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown, and You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. And trust me—there are many more.
As you build your bookshelf, start seeking out local events to meet others on a similar journey. Bonus points if they’re further along! You don’t need to be in the same field. Success is contagious, and we’re shaped by the people we spend time with. Just be sure to define what your version of success looks like. I’ve been in rooms with people who run multiple businesses but are exhausted and burnt out—that’s not success to me. I’m much more inspired by people who are building wealth and getting eight hours of sleep, working out, traveling, and enjoying life.
Finally, trust your gut. People—often with the best intentions—will throw advice your way, whether you ask for it or not. Even if you’re new, you still have to listen to yourself. This is your business, and it will succeed because you are behind it. Unsure what it feels like to trust your gut? Look for decisions that feel hopeful, empowering, and exciting—even if they’re a little uncomfortable. You should never feel small or like you’re compromising your values.
There’s no single path to success and no perfect formula. But one truth always remains: just keep going. You’ve got this.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Long-distance running has completely transformed how I approach challenges. It’s helped me develop one of the most vital skills out there: pacing. Discovering your dream, building it, and eventually living it—it’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon. And actually living that cliché has made all the difference in my life.
Every day, I wake up and put in the necessary reps to prepare my body for race day. There are times I can’t imagine making it to the finish line—but with consistent effort and practice, I’m now setting bigger and bolder goals. Like averaging a sub-6:30 minute mile pace. Or running a half marathon in every state. It’s the daily grind that reveals what I’m truly capable of. It reminds me that I’m stronger than I ever thought.
The same principles apply to my business. What am I doing daily, weekly, monthly to keep it in shape? Each week, I aim to pass along one referral, meet with one fellow business professional, and learn one new thing. I’m not sure what my next big business goals are yet—maybe writing a new e-course every six months, or posting two videos per day across platforms. I don’t have it all figured out. But I do know this: the more reps I put in, the stronger I get. And the stronger I get, the more I believe in myself—and the bigger I allow myself to dream.
