Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peter Hurley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Peter, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
In order to keep your creativity alive, it’s important to experience the world around you for more than what it is. I use sunsets as an example. It’s simple to look at a sunset and see how beautiful it is, but the more you slow down and truly observe it, the more different colors you’ll notice, you’ll experience how the light reflects on the clouds and shines on the world around you, how the sun warms your face, and how the chaos from the day starts to wind down.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Music been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I’m happy to be pursuing a career in the music industry as a DJ & Producer under the name HRLY (pronounced “Hurley”). I’ve been DJing for 4 years and have played at nightclubs such as Big Night Live, The Grand, Memoire, and Shrine, and have been on support for artists such as Diplo, Tiesto, Steve Aoki, and Dillon Francis. I’ve been producing music for the past 5 years and have a song signed to Liftoff Recordings record label under Disco Fries with many more releases to come in 2024.
I also host and independently-curated event called Funk House Night with another DJ, who goes by the name BTB, and we will be hosting our 3rd event since inception on Wednesday, February 28th. These nights consist of downtempo house remixes of RnB and Hip Hop classics, similarly to the sound of Kaytranada, Austin Millz, or Disclosure. The events have previously been very successful and allow an escape from the monotonous typical club music people hear every weekend.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Be authentically yourself: it’s the easiest way to develop a brand because it can be exhausting putting on a facade and pretending to be someone you’re not naturally. Be uniquely yourself and the people who appreciate who you are will follow.
Network and be a nice person: as many have said, networking is key in pretty much any industry. Not only it is important to meet other people in your industry, but you need to do it the right way. Show love and support to others who deserve it without any expectations in return. Get your name out there by being a nice person, and people will naturally return the favor.
Don’t forget to live your life: it’s easy to get stuck in the grind mindset and continuously work on your craft. I used to, and sometimes still do, get anxiety when I’m not actively working on something that’s furthering my career, but it’s important to enjoy yourself, take some time off to refresh, and find balance in your social life and personal experiences.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
From a creativity standpoint, I think it’s important, and even more fun, to get involved in more than one outlet. For example, I am primarily a music producer and DJ, but by association in finding ways to develop my brand, I have additionally learned photo and video editing skills that have allowed me to create content to promote my music and set myself apart from other DJs and producers. On top of that, it’s important to have these secondary outlets to be creative for moments when I’m burnt out from music production or allow me to have more creativity using different media.
