We recently connected with Petty Murphy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Petty, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I like to read the crowd before I go on stage by mingling with them and having a conversation before I go on stage and then repeat the process with the material and crowd work I do on stage. It’s looks easy but it’s really hard to do but I just always remember that they’re just people like me, I just have the courage to speak with a microphone.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been doing standup comedy for the last 15 years and podcasting the last 4 and I have been a ambassador and advocate for the end of Gun Violence and Mental Health Awareness and I have really been outspoken about both since the death of my brother Kurel in Wichita, Kansas last year.
I am currently getting ready for my first two day run of shows in Las Vegas, July 26th-27th and I then will be getting ready for the final filming of my movie called “I Am Petty” which will be held at the Time Out Event Center in St.Joesph,Mo

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
A work ethic of course because if you don’t work, you don’t eat. You don’t get to see what these opportunities can put you in with a lazy and entitled mindset.
Being coachable because we may know a lot but we don’t know everything so take the advice of someone that has found success instead of being envious and jealous of them because it’s lonely at the bottom when everyone else is heading to the top.
Be Humble
You have to humble yourself sometimes because what God has blessed you with can easily be taken away. So if you messed up, take accountability and learn from your mistakes and be humble and honest with yourself and everyone else around you.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Faith
Having more faith in not only my ability but in the good lord himself and you have to have both in order for your blessings to come through and dreams to come true so fight for your dreams and watch your dreams fight for you.
