We were lucky to catch up with Phil Flock recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Phil, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
If you love what you do, you do not need motivation to do it.
And for all the annoying tasks in our life’s. Well, If we’re not in a position to outsource them. Here is a little trick which helps me. Imagine the strongest, smartest and best version of yourself,
peeking over your shoulder at all times. Try to make this person proud.
Don’t seek distraction. Don’t fall into the trap of procrastination. Make this guy or gal proud. Because many of us are programmed to work way harder for others than for yourself. Therefore. Imagine this person. And make him or her proud. Every day and always.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Im not special. Im just a boy with a dream like many others. The difference is that I never stopped working on this dream. I’ve learned the skills I needed and continue learning more to not just reach this dream but to live it every day. I’ve been directing, operating cameras and making visual effects my entire adult life. And all I ever wanted is to do this for a living.
For me that means. To make a bunch of money with the people I care about most while telling the stories I enjoy.
If it’s a Netflix movie with a cast I admired since I was a child. Or a ridiculous YouTube shortfilm where a guy with explosive diarrhea becomes a ticking time bomb. If I get to bring what’s in my little head onto the screen, any screen, and I get paid for it. I’m with it. How could you not. That’s the dream. At least. That’s my dream. My brand is me. As uncensored as the platforms I publish on allow it. While I do that I’ve also made it my mission to become the supporting artists my 20 year old me needed. If it’s in my power to get someone, anyone with a goal, closer to it? I will do so. Because us artists are nothing without the power of the community. The world is cutthroat as it is. It’s up to us to make a difference.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Knowing your stuff is just the foundation. It’s not gonna get you hired. And rehired.
Emotional intelligence is probably the most important skill there is in any industry. To be able to communicate efficiently and somewhat respectfully, being on time and other small very easily accessible features will get one ahead.
Besides that what has always helped me is to be transparent about your skills, strengths and most of all weaknesses. It’s good to know your value. But swallow your ego and asking for help if you need to. There is nothing wrong with being honest. A “I’m sorry. This task is out of my league” is worth so much more than delivering work below expectations. Professional artists are problem solvers. If you don’t know how to solve a problem, figure it out, find someone who can, or simply walk away. But don’t BS your way through a job. It leaves a bad taste and you’ll burn bridges. I know it because I’ve done it. Don’t make the same mistake.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Making me believe I will never be good enough gave me the ambition to prove them wrong. It’s a battle which I can’t win. I know that now. But besides the daddy issues I’ll have to work out now as a grown up, it really give a the drive to become successful in what I want to do, but most of all, it pushed me towards wanting to be happy and surround myself with people I love and being loved by.
