Meet Philip Gel

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Philip Gel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Philip with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

From looking at corporations and wanting to be antithetical to that.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Sound & Savor is a vegan food business that was established in Oakland, California in 2004. We do catering, personal chef work and are mostly known for an underground restaurant series in my loft in West Oakland, often featuring world renowned musicians in a very intimate space.
All food is seasonal and hand crafted with homemade tempeh, noodles, breads and much more. A focus on the incredible local and seasonal availability with direct connections to many farms including the famous Masumoto family peach farm.
We host dinners most Saturdays that are open to the public as well as host private events and also cooking classes.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Diligence, honsty, integrity. Constant study and pursuit of more knowledge of cooking led me to a trip to Thailand in November where i spent time in a restaurant kitchen with a famous Thai vegan chef, working and studying with her.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

in a fascist country, corporations are favored and small businesses are hated. There has always been a strong bias against small businesses and even a fear of us. I simply persist and offer what i do
