We recently connected with Phoebe Liang and have shared our conversation below.
Phoebe, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
That’s such an interesting question. I think it really speaks to the core of what it means to navigate unique spaces. One Confucius quote sums up my perspective perfectly: “Walking among three people, I find my teacher among them. I choose that which is good in them and follow it, and that which is bad and change it. My cultural instincts, years of experience in the ever-evolving fashion industry, and an openness to the brilliance of others have taught me to see growth opportunities everywhere.
No other is the same. So from whom I can learn and excel.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder of PL Visual Media, a creative agency dedicated to social media strategy, branding, and visual storytelling. My fashion background has significantly shaped the way we approach our projects, blending a deep understanding of aesthetics with a keen eye for trends. What excites me most about this work is the diversity of stories we get to tell. From fashion to 3D innovation and entertainment, our clients inspire us to think creatively and approach each project with fresh perspectives.
Our unique approach lies in merging artistic vision with strategic execution. With roots in fashion, I bring a nuanced perspective to understanding how visual elements resonate with audiences, ensuring every piece of work is both impactful and authentic. This balance allows us to create narratives that not only stand out but also leave lasting impressions.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities have been fundamental in shaping my journey: adaptability, strategic vision, and emotional intelligence. Adaptability has been my anchor, shaped by my experiences navigating both Eastern and Western cultures. This skill enables me to approach challenges with fresh perspectives and find creative solutions, especially in industries where change is constant.
Strategic Vision is the ability to balance creativity with planning. I’ve learned to connect the dots between immediate opportunities and long-term goals, ensuring each decision aligns with the bigger picture.
Emotional Intelligence has allowed me to build meaningful relationships, understanding not just the needs of clients and collaborators but also the nuances of working with diverse teams.
For those starting out, I recommend embracing challenges that push you to adapt, think strategically, and connect with others. Reflect on your experiences to grow, and remember that building a business is as much about people and relationships as it is about skills.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past year, I’ve focused on enhancing two key areas: communication and management. As the founder of PL Visual Media, I’ve come to understand that clear communication is not just about sharing ideas—it’s about listening actively and fostering mutual understanding. This has been vital in aligning with clients’ visions and ensuring collaboration within my team.
In management, I’ve refined my ability to delegate and motivate, learning how to align individual strengths with collective goals. Building a cohesive, high-performing team requires more than leadership; it’s about creating a supportive environment where everyone can excel.
