We were lucky to catch up with Phoebe Sloan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Phoebe, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I’m in the business of self care as a yoga instructor and studio owner, so it is of the utmost importance to personally give myself the care I need in order to provide that for others. I think it’s important everyday to do at least one thing, a ritual, a service for yourself. It could be as simple as a walk outside, a skincare routine, sauna, taking a yoga class, even vacuuming or cleaning a closet! These things help to clear my mind, to get out of my mind, and into feeling and being present. When I’m more present I can be of greater service to others, and that is what I strive to be.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Parting Clouds Yoga is a family owned and women operated wellness studio in downtown Maumee, OH. We offer a variety of yoga class styles from relaxing restorative to invigorating vinyasa, as well as Barre classes for a full body toning workout. Each instructor is highly trained and certified, offering modifications for any contraindications, for ease, or for a greater challenge. At PCY we strive to build a community of positivity, welcoming every body, lighting the path to help you discover and explore your wellness journey.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that had a great impact on opening my wellness studio were maintaining and open mind and having trust in the process, communication, and accepting help from others who have the skills that I don’t necessarily have.
Trusting that what I am offering to the community is for the good of the community, and that I’m providing a positive, helpful, and enjoyable service has helped me with a few of the challenges in the beginning stages of opening, and still helps now. I was grateful that a lot of things like finding a place to rent for instance, fell into place pretty simply, and I attribute it to that open mindedness.
Communicating is such a basic but possibly most important quality. Keeping lines of communication open to clients, instructors, collaborators, basically anyone contacting or helping at Parting Clouds. I really strive to have personal relationships with clients so there can be a strong community. Always being open to the ideas of instructors and their needs, and allowing them to feel open to come to me is really important.
Knowing that I don’t obtain all the skills necessary to do every single thing at the studio, and surrounding myself with people that can offer those skills has been helpful in running a smooth and successful business. I would advise anyone to reach out to professionals in accounting, marketing, networking, construction, etc to make life a little less chaotic. Giving up control can be very freeing.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
I think having a positive mental attitude is always an ideal attribute to a client. Although, I don’t believe in having an “ideal” client. It’s my job to help those that choose to come to me or my studio to find what they’re looking for in their personal wellness journey. Starting anything new especially fitness or personal growth is always a challenge, no matter what your physical or mental characteristics are. I believe in showing anyone who attends classes at Parting Clouds kindness and support to allow them to grow, using the tools I’ve acquired in my years of training and knowledge.
