We recently connected with PHOEBE TEETERS and have shared our conversation below.
Hi PHOEBE, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is something I believe we’re constantly learning. Over the years life has been my greatest teacher. In 2022 I had aneurysm and I have pushed myself harder than I ever have to come back from that and push towards everything I truly want in my life. Learning that we can truly have what we honestly want if we just continue to put the work in no matter the obstacles is by far one of the best lessons I’ve learned. Also, anyone I’ve truly respected and had any form of admiration for has been put to the test multiple times to achieve their personal greatness.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist, 1313 skateboard maker, and an art educator. I started drawing every day at five years old and my introduction to skateboarding was at ten years old. Ever since I was eighteen years old I’ve been exhibiting my art work in galleries, museums, and businesses in the southeast. I’ve also shown work in Los Angeles, Orlando, Nashville, New Orleans, and Savannah. I’ve taught mixed media art classes at the Orlando Museum of Art, McColl Center, The Light Factory, and Sawtooth Art Center. I primarily teach middle school through high school students.
In the early years I started out exhibiting my photography then transitioned over the years into experimenting mosaics and with mixed media. art. Would say, I’m best known for my collage and skateboard work. Over the years I found a way to combine things that I was deeply passionate about like skateboarding and collage. This April will mark nine years that I’ve been making skate art and skateboards. I’m extremely proud of that and am immensely grateful for the support I’ve received from the art and skateboarding community.
In addition to making art and teaching, I also like to curate art shows. Coming on April 4th I will be collaborating with Blacksheep Skateshop, Stardust Skateshop, Paracosm, and Pabst Blue Ribbon on the art show INTROSPEQUE featuring work by Michael Sieben founder of Rodger Skateboards and former Managing Editor of Thrasher Magazine and founder of Closer Skateboard Magazine and legendary photographer Jamie Owens. The show will be hosted at Crownstation, with beats by NASH, and delicious bites from Banah Mi Brothers food truck. I currently have work available at Tattoo Projects, a shop deck at Blacksheep Skateshop, and an upcoming solo show at Summit Coffee in Noda. I have more art shows that I’m curating and participating in throughout the year. If you would be interested in attending one or seeing my most current work please go to @1313phoebe on Instagram.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been personally important to me to have in all areas of life are consistency, work ethic, and drive. We all have things that come up in our lives. Some of it we can control and some of it we can’t. When you’re truly driven you will continue to work no matter the obstacles.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
It’s not one thing that my mom and stepdad did that was impactful it was multiple things that have helped shaped me into the person I am today. Growing up I always had the youngest parents and I’m forever grateful for that because, they allowed me to find my own path. I’ll never forget after I decided to go to art school my mom telling me I had been fighting being an artist my whole life.
