We were lucky to catch up with Phylicia Felton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Phylicia , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I think my work ethic comes from my mother. Growing up and watching her commit to and fulfill her obligations with grace really allowed me to understand the importance of doing good work, and doing it with excellence. Now, when I work, I like to meet and exceed all expectations because that is how I was raised. I don’t just do “good enough”.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The core of who I am, first and foremost, is a child of God. I am also the wife of a 20-year Army veteran, mother of three, daughter to two Army veterans, and an Army veteran myself! I have been married for 13 years to my husband, and best friend, Elijah. We have three children: Maryah (19), Felisha (13), and Elijah Jr. (11). I served 8 years in the Army, and after I honorably discharged, I decided to get my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology so that I could help people overcome their mental health challenges. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in 2022, and I have provided therapy to adults, children, and couples since then. I recently decided to step out on faith and start my own business in event planning, leaving my full-time job. I founded E&P Elegant Events, which allows me to plan and design the celebrations that my client(s) dream of. In addition to planning services, we provide day-of coordination, rental services, photo booth services, and decorating. The most exciting part about being an event planner is watching everything come together. The look on my client’s face when everything is revealed is priceless. In that moment, my heart smiles.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe my top three qualities are: having a genuine heart, having a strong work ethic, and having integrity. These three qualities have shaped who I am from an early age, and I am often told that I have a big heart. This is probably one of the reasons for my decision to become a helping professional. These qualities have led to doors being opened in both my military and civilian career. When the naysayers told me I was not qualified, I was still offered the position or promoted. Looking back, and even now as I join the land of entrepreneurship, I have lacked nothing. I believe that is only by the grace of God and His guiding hand as He poured these qualities into me. My advice to people who are early in their journey is to stay humble and honest in all you do. Stay true to who you are and walk in your purpose. Don’t listen to the naysayers or the seed of doubt that may sneak into your mind as you get started.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me is pray for me, with me, and teach me how to pray for myself. I honestly do not think I would be who I am, and where I am today if it wasn’t for that. Apart from that, they instilled the importance of work in me. I know and see a lot of people who sit around waiting for things to happen for them or looking for a hand out that may never come. I remember being a little girl and picking tomatoes in my grandfather’s garden for a quarter so I could get something from the store. Or walking down to the corner store for my Aunt because I knew she would let me keep the change. I have had a job (sometimes multiple jobs) since I was legally able to do so. My work ethic and drive has been tremendously invaluable in my life.
