We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pippi Saya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Pippi, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I worked for The Walt Disney Studios for 16 years as ahead in the clouds creative stuck at a corporate desk job. When the pandemic hit in 2020, it was like hitting a reset button, First and foremost, I reestablished my relationship with Jesus, I was always chasing the next thing that was going to make me happy, and when I achieved it, was on to the next. I realized that my faith had been put on the back burner for most of my life, and once I opened my heart to Jesus it all started falling back into place. I rediscovered my passion for photography, went back to school (and discovered that I also loved graphic design!) and got my AA. I then started my own freelance business only to get sidelined for close to a year since I needed to have surgery on my right hand. During my recovery I yet again had nothing but time, but now I had a better idea of the path that lies ahead, and decided that I wanted to use my talents helping non-profits, while also opening my small business of faith, mermaid and fall based apparel and products, I freely admit that I’m a paradoxical person – I love Jesus, pumpkins, bats and gloomy weather – which is why I want to create merchandise for all the other seemingly misfits that are looking for a place/someone to fit in with.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
It’s a rather daunting task, but I’m looking to break the barriers of religion. For so long it seems like everyone has been divided, pointing the finger at one another and never themselves, Whether it’s my spookier aesthetic in photos, beachy graphic design vibes or quirky Jesus sayings on merch, I want people to feel comfortable and know that we don’t have to fit into a singular box. It’s ok to be different! And also, helping one another. There’s so many non-profits that need help with their logos, brochures, web design…I want to inspire others to be generous with their talents.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Number one is humility. You’re never going to know everything, and you’re going to mess up. I was so caught up in thinking that I had to know how to do everything when I first started, but with how rapidly technology is changing, it’s close to impossible. So stop beating yourself up! Also, ALWAYS be open to constructive criticism, it will truly help you grow as an artist.
Second would be kindness. Not only being kind to others, but to yourself – give yourself and others grace. But also remember that not everyone will reciprocate that, and don’t take it personally.
Third, don’t think that you need to be a carbon copy of what everyone else is doing. At first I thought that I needed to mirror what the current trends were, but that is the easiest way to get lost in the crowd. You were made unique, with your unique style, for a reason. Let your personality shine!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! We grow so much more when we work together. If someone needs photos of their products taken/edited, a logo created/redesigned for their company, designs for their small business merchandise or just want to promote each others business I’m all in!
