We recently connected with Please Use Artist Name and have shared our conversation below.
Please Use, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
We make music that we want to hear. Some of our music is more accessible than others. Maker of the Bear has been through ups and downs, we’ve evolved personally and musically and continue to keep the music center while not wavering on our combined personal values.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Maker of the Bear is a moody pop band born in North Carolina. It began as a solo project of Caleb Gray and grew into its current arrangement, Caleb Gray and Jacob Gray. Caleb and Jacob began collaborating in a former band, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea (Denton, Tx 2008). Caleb and Jacob bring their unique influences to Maker of the Bear. Rather it’s passing tracks back and forth to assess audio fidelity, adding one additional harmony here and there, or dissecting a song for a year before releasing it, Caleb and Jacob take a collaborative approach to their work that serves as the foundation to Maker of the Bear’s sound.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Stick with it. Making music is challenging. Don’t forget that the music is for you and provides meaning to others by chance. If you love it others will love it too.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
A song is never perfect. There is always some little thing you can tweak. Get it 90% perfect then let it go. Set your art free. Give it a chance to be something for someone else.
