Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Plethora. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Plethora, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I’ve been playing music since elementary school and have always enjoyed making people laugh. I basically combined the 2 elements into one comedic rock/metal band and it seems to work well. Making people forget their life problems for 30 mins-1 hour is always rewarding.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We here at Plethora present ourselves as the most versatile and unique ultimate party band, bringing a full concert experience of high energy comedic rock music and fun unlike anything you’ve seen before. At first glance, it may be hard to understand exactly what we do. As the word plethora means a lot of something, that is exactly what we offer musically. All members of the band listen to a wide variety of music genres and we aim to incorporate all of those styles into our music, with rock typically at the core of the song.
With nearly 80 songs worth of original material and parodies, we can tailor every set to fit the needs and wants of all venues, promoters, and booking agents! Need a high intensity rock show? We got you covered! Looking for a metal band to throw down songs to get the pit moving? We got you covered! Looking for some high energy folk rock to get the bar hyped on St. Paddy’s day? We got you covered! We even play acoustic for those venues where it’s just too plain loud! With songs about food, pirates, drinking, partying, cats, vikings, and even Guy Fieri, we’ve got a little something for everyone! Last but not least, we thrive on crowd interactivity! We have anywhere from 1-5 stunt guys/stage dancers who dress up in song themed outfits to hype the crowd and even help them feel a part of the show! You don’t want to miss what this band of America themed superheroes has to offer!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The ability to write fun and catchy songs that get stuck in your head is a good skill. I think most people latched onto us because every song is an earworm. After going to more than 500 shows it seems like a lot of local bands don’t do a lot to stand out or are writing about the same topics like breakups or rising up from the ashes like every radio band has done for the last 40 years. You don’t hear many bands singing about drinking gravy, eating Cap’n Crunch, going to space, or getting drunk in a Walmart haha. I’ve found that most of our fans like a wide variety of genres in music which we offer a…. plethora of…
Creativity is the main big quality. Being able to create costumes and band lore with our characters helps us stand out in the crowd of bands in black T shirts.
Persistence to carry on when you don’t get a show you really wanted to play on or a gig flops is also a good qualities to have. You just have to keep pushing forward.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Being in a comedic band, it is rough trying to get on shows with national bands. Even though we can tailor our set to fit any gig style-wise, we always get roped into this gimmick band trope just because our lyrics are funny, so the only shows we ever get to really open for are with other comedic/gimmick bands, to which there are very few compared to the number of radio bands touring. Not to mention that 75% of the time those tours bring their own openers with no local slots.
Breaking into new areas 1-2 hours from our hometown is also a pain. Venues and promoters demand that you can guarantee 30-50 people in ticket sales, but how can you get a fanbase in that area if nobody lets you play there to build said fanbase?
