We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Polly Walshin . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Polly below.
Polly, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
That is a loaded question ! It’s kind of like what’s your testimony? The answer is we are constantly throughout life learning and growing . My resilience got stronger as I focused on how my hardship and my faith of knowing that this will lead to something better increased ! A smart woman once told me you can either be pitiful or powerful. You get to choose. The word Resilience is just you not being pitiful and riding above whatever it is.
I had a very strong mother who raised me.. She was a single mother with no child support from my father. We went through many challenges, and I always saw her rise above. I believe that, and my faith created the foundation for my resilience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am is a international motivational speaker, humanitarian, minister of the gospel to nations, realtor , and best selling author of the biography, “You Got Daddy Issues”, . I had the honor of recently being featured in the hit documentary on HBO called the Invisible Pilot .
My Dad was involved in the Iran, Contra scandal in the 80 s and was the largest drug smuggler in US history . This is what prompted me to write her book You Got Daddy Issues. during quarantine,. This is part of my Resilience. See my dad faked his suicide on my seventh birthday so I believed he was dead most of my life until I was 16. I learned early how to become resilient . . This was also a big motivation to move out of the south
I attended Lee Strasberg acting school in New York when my mother and I moved to New York after being in Memphis till I was a junior in high school.
This launched my acting and modeling career that led me to California . I graced the covers of the calendars for Napa auto parts, and Snap on tools. I was also Miss Hawaiian tropic ,and Miss Dixie Speedway for NASCAR.
When I graduated from college I took a sabbatical being committed to being a stay at home to be there for my kids . When I got divorced when the kids were small, I learned how to manage my time and still had the blessing to be there 100% of the time for my two kids . This also enhanced my to be Resilient to keep pressing forward. ! what got me through the toughest days is being able to be there for my family.. The key to Resilience is not looking at your current situation, but finding something to hope for in the future.
I have a bachelors in marketing and design and a masters degree in secondary education . While , being a realtor and being there for the kids at night I would study so that I could get my masters degree.
. I was a physical education teacher for years in the inner city schools. I have been a real estate agent for over 20 years.
During the pandemic after writing my book and being in the documentary. I purchased a infrared health spa called I Sweat Lodge. I was set on being a chain of amazing spas that would help heal everyone. Unfortunately, due to Covid and all the lockdowns I had to shut my doors in 2022. Also, the person that published my book somehow, I didn’t get a dollar from that or from the documentary
Througj all these trials and tribulations, I have learned is that you can use what was meant for evil for good no matter what. That is a true definition of being resilient.
. My message of Hope and restoration is what I want to leave as a life Legacy.
Remember, our mess can become our message to help others !!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back the three qualities that I feel were most important during my journey were faith in something bigger than myself, love, and diligence!
You cannot allow your circumstance or how you feel to dictate your future. You have a choice within yourself to be pitiful or powerful. My dad used to say problems are like clouds they come and they go you get to choose if you’re attached to them or not.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I rewrote my book after I did not receive any money from the first one and I’m pretty sure there was something scammy about that one. However, I learned and I re-wrote it and I republished it. I am really looking for someone to collaborate with to do a podcast. Possibly a call in hotline where people can tell us all their daddy issues .. I can walk them through what has worked for me throughout the years. I don’t have a website because I don’t know how to do that. You cant get in touch with me that way but I will leave my email address and you’re welcome to email me with anything. By the way if anyone knows how to build a website and they’d like to help me that would be really awesome too. Everything I have all the magazine articles all the podcasts had been word-of-mouth and God has promoted me. I’ve just had to sit back and watch the miracles.
