We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Porscha Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Porscha , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from knowing that God is always backing me. Throughout these last 36 years, I have lived through some unfortunate events. I witnessed my mom go through domestic violence, battle a drug and alcohol addiction, as well health issues that she later succumbed to; which at times left my siblings and I with the short hand of the stick. We were poor. At times, we went without clothes, shoes, food and shelter. But, I had a made up mind that better was always on the horizon, and that I had the power to change my outcome of my life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I cook professionally, and have been doing so for about 18 years. What I believe is most exciting about cooking is that I feel limitless in the kitchen. There is no beginning or end to my creative process. My cooking style is a mixture of fine dining, soul and caribbean cuisine, different styles of cakes, sweets, as well as drinks. Cooking has also been the gateway to my creative path with arts and crafts, such as creating prayer boards according, to Holy scriptures.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the qualities that was most impactful on my journey was having a love and passion for what I was doing. Also, being open to learning my craft in new and better ways, and always wanting to be top tier in serving those who patronize me. For folks early on their journey, I would say just start. Once you start, stay consistent and always find ways to grow and learn.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My spiritual dad has been the most helpful to me in growing in the area of character development. From my countenance, to my speech, my thought patterns, my faith, and my patience, he has helped me to walk into the true essence of who God called me to be. I’m grateful for him pouring his wisdom, patience, time and love into my life. Because of him, every day I live in hope of a being a better me.
