We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Porshia Banks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Porshia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose kind of found me. I started my career working primarily in finance. I resisted fashion whole heartedly. I wanted a “smart” career. I decided to open my boutique as a side project and ended up with no staff and had to quit my job to honor my retail lease and delve into my boutique as full time employment. It was then I learned there were so many components to operating a fashion business and it was truly what I was passionate about.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We are a luxury swimwear designer and I own and operate a women’s clothing boutique. We just showcased at Texas Swim Fest in Houston and the inaugural Texas Swim Week in Dallas. Our brands goal is simple, fun! There is not a lot of time we can allocate to being playful and few spaces that provide the opportunity for fun. We strongly believe fashion should be fun; an extension and expression of our lighter side. Our pieces are designed to showcase your creativity, to illuminate the lighter more fun side of fashion but with a heavy focus on quality and detail. We spend a lot of time crafting and curating each piece so that the love is in the details. Next up is Miami Swim Week. We will be showcasing 3 brand new collections and couldn’t be more excited.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Customer Service- I spent several years working in VIP service. Through that experience I learned the importance of focusing on each and every customer as an individual and meeting their standard of service. This is something that is critical to brand success.
Flexibility- It’s really important to be flexible to be able to adjust and change with customer needs, market demands and the social landscape.
Tenacity- Without the sheer determination to make it happen by every possible means it’ll be a tough rough. There are many obstacles to success and opportunity, having the mindset that you will proceed no matter what is absolutely necessary.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My mom has been most impactful in my journey to overcome challenges. Watching her navigate life with strength, beauty and optimism empowered me to try to do the same. She always seems to navigate complicated situations with a level of optimism and courage I’d like to mirror.
