We recently connected with Porter Stout Beer God and have shared our conversation below.
Porter Stout, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through sports.. I used to move around a lot and every year I was the only new person that would be on the team. Having to overcome obstacles became fun. Even though I lived in all of these different states, I still loved to come to a new school and see if I was good enough. I try to use that same confidence in What a rough life.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
What a rough life offers a variety of food from over 48 different countries spanning four continents. I think what is the most exciting are the new countries added to our tours. New York, for example, has the unique flavors of Uzbekistan, while in Atlanta flavors from Pakistan leave you wanting more.
With over 100 beers under his belt, Spencer from Sceptre Arts has been a frequent stop on our tours. Collaborating with the homies at Little Cottage and Fermented Wax you’re missing out if you haven’t been.!
Taking a step away from Charlotte and going back to my second city, Greenville, South Carolina, this upcoming fall!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I think that my love for different cultures has fueled my interest and work ethic in regards to this journey.
Secondly to remain humble. Entering the craft beer scene can be confusing. I remember not knowing which type of beer to choose and just only drinking a certain style. I ask a bunch of questions to my brewery owners and staff to learn as much as I can so I can teach my customers. Some people think they know everything, but I don’t and so I always try to remain humble and ask questions.
Lastly, my love for Social studies as a kid actually helps me as an adult. I remember looking at the globe and always wanting to explore. I love looking up weird countries seeing what the people look like and what type of food did they eat? This helps me today because I try to choose countries that people generally don’t eat from. If you can’t go there, try the food. It gives you a taste of their culture.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
The one thing that I love about New York is that the breweries there are striving to make New York beer the best. They are not competing with each other they are collaborating. In the future I want to have my own beer, so I can offer it to customers who book my tours.
The folks I am looking for are small business owners and hustlers just like me. People who are going to go get the money and not wait for it to chase them. I’m building a bridge from New York to Atlanta and right now, who’s coming with me?
