Hi Portia, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Embracing Uniqueness: The Bold Yet Humble Journey of Success as the Only One in the Room
In a world where diversity should be celebrated, however at times overlooked, being the only one in the room who looks like you can undoubtedly be both a challenge and a blessing. My journey has been a testament to the power of embracing individuality, navigating uncharted waters, and defying norms to achieve success.
As I embarked on my path, I quickly realized that being different wasn’t a setback but rather an opportunity to stand out and make a lasting impact. Embracing my uniqueness allowed me to tap into a wellspring of creativity and perspective that set me apart from the crowd. While it wasn’t always easy, this distinction turned out to be a powerful advantage, as it opened doors and allowed me to contribute in ways that were truly one-of-a-kind.
It’s crucial to understand that our journeys are not meant to mirror others but to pave a path uniquely our own. Success, in its truest form, lies in acknowledging that each step we take is authentically ours. This realization instilled in me the confidence to persevere, even in the face of uncertainty, knowing that my journey was destined to be different, and that was perfectly okay.
The key to thriving in such a setting is harnessing the power of self-belief. While the road may be less traveled, I discovered that it holds untapped potential for growth and self-discovery. Embracing my identity and recognizing the value of my perspectives allowed me to add a distinctive touch to everything I pursued.
Moreover, being the only one in the room taught me the art of adaptability, with God’s grace helping me navigate through challenging situations. I learned to communicate effectively and empathize with others, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse backgrounds and experiences, all through God’s compassionate guidance. In doing so, I not only found my voice but also became a bridge to connect various worlds.
Along this remarkable journey, I faced challenges, and at times, misconceptions from those who didn’t fully comprehend the beauty of embracing individuality. However, I refused to let these obstacles deter my pursuit of success. By God’s grace, instead, I used them as stepping stones, propelling me towards greater heights and solidifying my resolve.
To those finding themselves in similar positions, I offer this advice: cherish your uniqueness and recognize that your journey will be unlike anyone else’s, with God’s grace providing the support you need. Embrace your identity and the power it holds to inspire change, guided by God’s loving presence. Celebrate the fact that your job is one of one! Also, celebrate the fact that your path grants you the ability to make an unparalleled impact, with God’s direction lighting the way.
As I continue on this humble yet bold journey, I hold true to the belief that my success lies in staying true to myself while opening doors for others to embrace their uniqueness too, all with God’s grace and loving guidance. Let us relish in the understanding that being the only one in the room is not a limitation but an invitation to redefine the norms and inspire a world that thrives on diversity and individuality, with God’s grace and wisdom as our compass.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In my dynamic life, I pursue independent modeling, entrepreneurship, and a business administration degree with a finance focus. As a radio personality correspondent, I connect with diverse audiences and aspire to be a TV personality, with great supporters like Echoing Soundz behind me.
Recently, I assumed the role of Creative Director at Go Viral LLC as an independent contractor, overseeing media, music production, and more. I’m thrilled to see where this new journey takes me! This is not the end of my road; I actively and passionately seek more work opportunities to make a positive impact in my society.
Additionally, I will be stepping into a new 9-to-5 role as an appraisal support, contributing to growth and success in all business ventures I’m involved in. Embracing multiple streams of income and staying open to new opportunities, I remain ambitious, motivated, and dedicated to growth.
Supporting the non-profit organization WE CAN NOW is close to my heart, alongside my passion for humanitarian work and sharing my journey of Great Faith through public speaking. I also have great support for organizations and businesses within my community, such as Black Leaders Collective, Austin Justice Coalition, Elon and Company, The Black Fund | Austin community foundation, and many more, all of which are based in the Austin Area.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that made a significant impact were perseverance, adaptability, and the willingness to learn from failures. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace challenges with resilience, be open to change and growth, and see failures as valuable lessons for improvement. Developing these qualities will strengthen your path towards success and personal fulfillment.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
God has been the most helpful guide in overcoming challenges and developing essential skills as I strive to achieve success. His unwavering support and guidance continue to shape me into the person I am today. Through faith and trust in Him, I gain the strength and wisdom needed to tackle obstacles and grow, knowing that I am still on my journey towards success. His presence in my life remains the foundation for my aspirations, achievements, and personal growth, and I am grateful for His constant grace and encouragement in my pursuit of excellence.
