We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Presley Owusu-bonsu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Presley, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Developing the ability to take risks often involves a mix of self-reflection, exposure to challenging situations, and learning from both successes and failures. For me, it started with small steps outside of my comfort zone. Saying “yes” to opportunities that felt uncertain but had the potential for growth. Over time, I realized that taking risks didn’t always lead to perfect outcomes, but it consistently taught me valuable lessons and built resilience. I also began to reframe risks as opportunities to learn rather than something to fear. Observing others who took bold steps, whether in personal or professional settings, inspired me to emulate their courage. Eventually, I came to understand that calculated risks, grounded in preparation and intuition, often lead to significant growth and rewards.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
About PresElyte Events

We specialize in planning and coordinating events of all types, including weddings, corporate functions, celebrations, and community gatherings, all while reflecting God’s glory in every detail.
Meet Presley
Hi, I’m Presley, the founder of PresElyte Events. My love for event planning began in my childhood, watching my mom, Priscilla, organize baby showers for church ladies. She would put me to work with a hot glue gun, helping create beautiful decorations. Those moments instilled in me the joy of crafting meaningful experiences for others.
The name “PresElyte” comes from a humorous nickname my mom’s twin, Lady Joan, gave me. She jokingly calls me “Adwoa Presely,” and it stuck in the best way. Though my name is often mispronounced or misspelled, it’s a name I cherish because of its personal connection. The “Elyte” in PresElyte comes from the word “elite,” reflecting my belief that everyone is a person of dignity and worth. This philosophy is at the core of what PresElyte Events stands for.
My dad, Tony, also shaped my journey by encouraging me to think outside the box and leave people with lasting, positive impressions. Together, these influences inspired my passion for creating events that are thoughtful, purposeful, and impactful.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, there are three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in shaping PresElyte Events:
1. Creativity and Design: The ability to creatively visualize and execute event concepts has been crucial. From crafting personalized décor to designing cohesive event aesthetics, this skill allows me to bring clients’ visions to life in a meaningful way.
Advice: Practice your craft constantly, stay inspired by looking at new trends, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Attend workshops, collaborate with others, and study design principles to refine your creative skills.
2. Organization and Attention to Detail: Planning events involves juggling multiple moving parts. Being organized and detail-oriented is essential to ensuring that everything runs smoothly and every detail is accounted for.
Advice: Invest in tools like project management apps, and develop a system for tracking timelines, vendor contracts, and client preferences. The more you streamline your process, the more efficient and less stressed you’ll feel when executing events.
3. Effective Communication: Whether it’s with clients, vendors, or team members, communication is the key to a successful event. Being clear, empathetic, and responsive helps build trust and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
Advice: Actively listen to clients and their needs. Practice clear and professional communication, both written and verbal. Don’t hesitate to ask questions to clarify expectations and keep all parties informed throughout the process.
For those early in their journey, I recommend focusing on developing these qualities through continuous learning and practice. Attend industry events, seek mentorship, and keep improving your skills. By honing your creativity, organization, and communication, you’ll be better equipped to navigate challenges and create unforgettable experiences for your clients.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I try to step back and calm myself. Here are a few things that help:
1. Prioritize and Break It Down: I break big tasks into smaller, easier steps. I focus on one thing at a time, starting with the most important tasks.
2. Take Breaks and Rest: Sometimes, I just need to take a short break, whether it’s a walk, deep breaths, or resting for a bit. Taking care of myself helps me feel better.
3. Stay Faith-Focused: My faith helps me stay grounded. When things get too much, I take a moment to pray or reflect, which helps me feel stronger and more in control.
Advice for Others: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s okay to take a break. Focus on what’s most important and give yourself permission to rest. Break things into small steps and remember you don’t have to do everything at once. Just take it one step at a time.
