Meet Priscila Buiar

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Priscila Buiar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Priscila, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

Since I was a child, my parents always taught me to get the homework done before the fun. First the duty, then the play, they used to say. We don’t have to be like that all the time, but I learned very young that we have to maintain our word, the things that we promise to ourselves. We don’t have to do something to prove others, but if we don’t maintain our discipline and our agreements, we’re just lying and harming ourselves.
Besides that, when I got older and more mature, I learned the importance of the physical exercises. Other than the benefits to our health, exercising every day teaches you to enjoy the process. Understanding that you won’t be at your best all the time, we have days and days, so it’s a huge getting to know yourself better. You understand your highs and lows; you observe how you can improve with repetition. And as someone who loves trying new activities and things, I see how I can learn or get better at something if I’m dedicated and disciplined to it. When you start, you’re not very good at something, but with focus and discipline, you start to see the results; you observe how one day, one act, one small step, can help you get better at something, can help you build something big and concrete. And everything that I said isn’t only about exercises; we can relate it to any activity in our life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Priscila Buiar. I’m from Maringá, a small city in Paraná, South Brazil. I started acting when I was nine. At the same time, I started to paint and draw, to model, and to become a good reader. I always say that I never chose art; art has chosen me. It felt like it was a calling.
One of the most special parts of being an artist is the capacity and the privilege to touch people’s lives. The opportunities to tell a lot of different stories, to represent different characters, and to connect with people are something magical. Recently, my life completely changed when I had the opportunity to work with the internet. Today I’m also an influencer, and I see a lot of women getting influenced or inspired by my lifestyle and what I share on my social media. That’s why I always try to be as responsible as I can with the content that I share.
Last year, I’ve developed a project called Selfcare, where I share a little bit of my process of self-knowledge and the tools and instruments that my followers and fans can use to develop themselves, to take care of their mental, spiritual, and physical health and it has been a life-changing experience for me. Once I started the project, I did not know where I wanted to go with it. I just knew that I wanted to give this group tools to become stronger, healthier, more confident, empowered, and so on. And getting closer to these amazing women made me be in touch with powerful stories—women that have been through a lot and still have the strength to smile and to go on; women that support me in awards, new projects, and in my day to day. I never imagined in my life that I’d experience something like that. An amazing community of women always supporting me and my career and supporting each other. I feel like we’ve created together something big. Something bigger than I’ve ever imagined. Now I don’t call them my fans or followers; I call them my friends, because they teach me a lot every single day and they give me proposals in my career and life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As I talked before about self-discipline, I’d say to young girls to not lose themselves or their focus to please others. Not everyone knows what they want, and most people will make fun of you if you’re too focused, too disciplined, or if you’re following your heart. Keep moving. Life passes too fast, and we have to enjoy the opportunities to make our dreams come true. Sometimes we lose too much time and energy trying to fit in. Don’t do that. Focus on your dreams, on your path, on your own life.
If you can, prioritize studies and work to be independent. Financial vulnerability is very delicate and can put you in places you don’t want to be in relationships. This is a very important topic for women, so I always talk about the importance of having financial education to my followers and fans. I want them to be empowered.
My third piece of advice is to not wait until you’re ready to take action. I saw a phrase yesterday that I agree with 100%: walk that the path will open itself. It’s so true because once we wait to be ready to do something or to start something, we feel like we are never ready, and it paralyzes us. Perfectionism is no good. So I always try to go on, to enjoy the opportunities, to start and have fun, even when I’m really bad at something. Focus and discipline will help me get better at whatever, but we can not be afraid to try, to look ridiculous, to make mistakes, to begin and be horrible at something.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

I always talk about my mom in interviews because she is my first and best supporter. She was born in a small city in South Brazil (just like I was) called Maringá, in Paraná. She never had support from her family or society to study, to work, or to be independent, living her dreams and getting to know this big world. And it was crucial for her to act differently when she had me and my sister. Since we were kids, she supported us taking swimming classes so we would not be afraid of pools or the sea; English classes so we could communicate with people; a college degree so we could work in what we loved; driver licenses to go anywhere we felt like; traveling wherever we wanted to; and so much more. She never said “no” to me, and she made me be courageous because I always feel like I can do it all. My parents taught me values, ethics, to be kind, to be dedicated to my work and studies, to be responsible for my actions, and to never step over others to get what I want. They taught me to work hard, to have empathy for others, and to be authentic in a world where most people don’t know who they are and usually pretend to be someone else to please others. Today, I know that my story, where I came from, and my values are my treasure and what makes me unique.
