We were lucky to catch up with Prithvi Chauhan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Prithvi, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I find inspiration by observing the world around me, particularly how light interacts with different materials in the environment. Sometimes limitations, such as budget constraints, time limitations, or technical challenges, push me to think creatively and find innovative solutions. These challenges have often fueled my creativity and allowed me to think outside the box. Lastly, I try to find a balance between intense periods of work and taking time to recharge and clear my mind.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a cinematographer, also known as the director of photography, my main duty is to interpret the director’s vision visually and translate it into impactful imagery on screen. I strive to bridge the gap between the director’s artistic vision and the technical execution of the film. My role encompasses various technical and artistic aspects, including lighting, composition, camera work, and visual storytelling, in order to create captivating visuals that enhance the cinematic experience and contribute to the emotional impact of the story.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my opinion, having patience is an essential skill in various aspects of work. Whether you’re striving to capture the ideal shot or collaborating with teammates, it’s crucial to understand that certain tasks take time. When working on a set, one may need to put in long hours and perform physically demanding work. Therefore, it’s vital to possess a strong work ethic to maintain focus and produce consistent results. Additionally, one must work closely with directors, producers, gaffers, 1st ACs, and other crew members. To ensure a successful production, it’s crucial to have effective communication and collaboration skills to foster a harmonious work environment.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
One potential challenge that I can think of would be the rapid advancement in camera and lighting technologies and software. I need to stay up-to-date to fully leverage the tools at my disposal. While these advancements offer exciting possibilities, they also demand a continuous effort to learn and adapt, ensuring that I can make informed choices that serve the project’s artistic vision.
