Meet Priya Tahim

We recently connected with Priya Tahim and have shared our conversation below.

Priya , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

Optimism is a funny thing. Some say it’s naive to be optimistic, but i think that being optimistic allows you to have hope. Being optimistic doesn’t mean you don’t acknowledge the realistic challenges that lay in front of you-but it does help you see that there is always some sort of light at the end of the tunnel.

I’ve always been the type of woman who enjoys being positive and finding the joy in miserable situations. I always tell my friends that i’m “delulu” in the best way. My Nanaji (Maternal Grandfather) always had a smile on his face. Growing up, he was such a resilient man. He was in/out of the hospital most of my life, but no matter how unwell he felt-he always would say “i’m 100% A Okay, tip top shape”. No matter how much life threw his way, he made the most of it. He would travel when he felt healthy, and make memories with those he loved around him.

I channel my optimism from him. He is one of my hero’s, and i will forever be thankful to him for teaching me that no matter what life throws my way, i will be okay. That there is nothing that i can’t work out, and there is little pockets of joy in every downfall.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Priya Tahim and i am the proud founder of Kaur Counseling. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Washington, DC, Virginia & Texas-who provides individual, family, and couples therapy to children, adolescents, and adults.

I am also an author who loves telling stories that help others find their voice. I grew up falling in love with stories, both fiction & non-fiction- and always found reading/writing as a way to express my feelings.

My motto is falling in love with yourself is the greatest love story of all. I find that once we can cultivate love within us, we allow it to radiate around us.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

There are so many qualities and skills that have impacted my journey, but the three that stand out to me are: resilience, passion, and curiosity. I, always dreamed of having my own practice and being a published author. There were so many setbacks, both professionally and personally, but i never let my vision fade.

For anyone that has their own business, you know that it’s no walk in the park. Some days you don’t know if you’ll make enough money or if you’re doing a good job. There is no one telling you what to do or how to be better. You have to be brave enough to take the risks, be resilient enough to stand up after you fall, and have the curiosity to keep growing and learning with time.

My advice to anyone who is following their dream is to never lose the vision that it started with. Visions expand, but always remember your “why”. That “why” is going to help you remain grounded and allow you to follow the path that is truly meant for you.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents are my everything. Growing up, i don’t think you realize how much your parents sacrifice for your future. As an adult, i am so thankful my parents instilled hard work and the meaning of community in my sisters and i.

My dad traveled most of my life. He still works full time, and has always shown me that hard work pays off, but it comes with sometimes missing out on things that may matter to you.

My mom is supermom. She carried the fort while my dad was working, but never let us feel like we were missing something. She made sure we knew the importance of hard work but also having fun and laughing. I’ll never forget the endless trips to Six flags and haunted houses or our dates watching ER and TGIF (If you know, you know the thrill of watching TGIF live, pre streaming!)
