Meet Prof. Levar Wilkerson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Prof. Levar Wilkerson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Prof. Levar, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

It took a long time to develop any kind of confidence. I did not grow up in a community that allowed me to be peaceful. I grew up in a area where we had to fight to defend ourselves, just to go to school. There used to be a TV show.
Family matters. There was a character Steve erkel, a lot of people treated me the same way they treated him. Because I decided to keep my head in my books and study hard so I can make something of myself. But during that time, no one knew that I was studying boxing, karate, and martial arts Self-defense.
I kept it to myself. There were many situations that I had to defend myself, but not to the point that anyone knew that I had been training in special arts of south defense. I grew up in a home that was very abusive, verbally, physically and spiritual. But I can say that God put good people in my path to help direct me in the right way, to help mode me into a strong, confident young man. It took a long time before I grew up and understood that it was up to me to develop my skills, and develop understanding of right and wrong but it did not change the fact that I had low self-esteem when it came to certain departments in my life. It was years later that I learned to respect myself and had to be independent. Focus on the things that I want in life and where I want to be in life. Now I teach the same thing to undeveloped youth, Single parents. Encouraging and mentoring men and women out of incarceration. Those with low self esteem and without any direction. I have done my best to give advice. Having to teach and deposit these life lessons into this generation. On of the things that I have been through in life. It’s been a blessing to be on the road that I have been put on. I would not change my past. My past has made me stronger. It has made me who I am. I am very grateful today. I have dojo for martial arts in Florida. As well as Texas, I’m grateful for the lifestyle that I have. My God has been good to me. I’ll pray that I always make the right decisions. And that the blessings in my life that I have, continues to motivate other people to make good decisions and do the right thing, and to know that they can achieve things, anything they put their mind to. I am grateful for this opportunity. Thank you…

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am very outgoing. I am enjoy personal time in the mountains. I love traveling right now. I am enjoying the filming industry, the traveling and supporting top stars in the movies. I am enjoying seeing people I grew up watching on TV being able to stand next to them, take photos with them. I am currently developing a new martial art system to be taught. I still have a passion for helping people and guide them to better opportunities. I want to help those who may be interested in doing acting and performing arts.

I have been training and working with MMA Fighting for years. I have a couple candidates that are promising that I am working with as well professional boxers. Looking forward to seeing these young fighters in the cage or the Square ring..

I am interested in opening a restaurant as well in the future ( authentic Mexican ). I have a delightful taste for this culinary culture.

I also recently started a drone business. We shoot commercial videography for wedding, party’s, ministries, small business, and big business commercials.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I took R.O.T.C. in high school and join the U.S. Military out of High School.. I received good leadership within this organization.. I am been training with great instructors like. Prof. Carlos Machado, Grandmaster Harfouche, Sifu Alejandro, Superfoot Wallace, Larry Downs Jr, Roy Jones Jr.
Learning jiu-jitsu, Karate, Judo, kungfu has taught me humility and discipline. I have been blessed to have a Navy Seal as a mentor and brother and bestfriend. Helping to keep me focused on success.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Right now I am currently facing time away from my sons. They lives in another state with thier mother. It is Christmas time. And I really want to spend more time with them. The hard thing is finding time outside of my career to spend more time with them and remain faithful to my financial obligations.. I know they need thier father and I need to be there but it’s not easy.. I pray that I have the finances to make this go much smoother but it requires more work and sacrifice..
