Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Prysm. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Prysm, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Our drive to make songs that are different from one another helps us keep our creativity going. While we are a rock band, we like to infuse various elements of rock and even other genres into our music. We all have different influences so us putting our brains together and going through the process of making a song takes time because we all try our best to understand one another. We believe that by not limiting ourselves to solely one style of music and hearing each other out really helps us creatively.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Prysm consists of Gerardo Ayala on vocals and rhythm guitar, Martin Osorio on lead guitar, Jacob Bautista on bass and Rudy Meneses on drums. Since the beginning of the band, our goal has always been to make good music and provide audiences with exciting live shows. Through lineup changes, disagreements within the band, amongst other hardships like when the pandemic hit, our goal has continued to remain the same. We combine all of our influences and come up with songs that bring something new to the world of rock and roll. We released some of our best work this past June with our EP “Life After Death.” We took months writing, recording, and mixing our own music. We put a lot of effort and passion into it and we hope that that’s reflected when it’s listened to. We believe it is both our best written and best recorded music to date. Our goal now is to spread the word about Prysm and get our name out there by playing shows and releasing even more original music so keep an eye out for that!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It may not sound music related at all, but we think that being open with each other, listening to one another and being able to come to compromises are definitely some of the most impactful ways we’re able to function as a band. Without respecting each other and what each one of us has to say, there’s no way we’d be able to be a band or be able to work as a unit. It is thanks to those reasons that we’re able to understand each other more and in turn able to write better music. If we didn’t have good relationships with one another, that would definitely impact the quality of our music and we probably wouldn’t get as much done as we’d like. Our advice to anybody looking to start a band is to think of it almost like being in a relationship. There will be disagreements, compromises, and a lot more things that come with being in a band. It’s best to prepare for that to happen and know what you’re getting into before you think about starting a band or joining one.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When we feel overwhelmed or feel like we need some time away for ourselves, we tell each other and if we need to take a break for a week then we’ll do that. Writing music can be draining and sometimes a break is very much needed to clear our thoughts and come back to figure out another day with a better mindset. There’s been many occasions where we’re working on a song and we feel like we’re chasing our own tails and feel uninspired. It’s similar to writer’s block. This is when communication is most important and when we need to sort of take a step back and take a break, whether it be for a day for a week.
