Meet Pun Chang

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pun Chang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Pun, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

For a long time, I didn’t know what my “thing” was. I didn’t grow up feeling like I had a standout skill or clear path but I knew I wanted to do something meaningful. Something that reflected who I was and what I could offer the world.

That’s what led me to acupuncture. It’s not something most people grow up understanding and yet it holds such deep, transformative potential. I saw that I could offer something unique and deeply needed. That gave me direction and more than that, it gave me a sense of alignment.

Over time, I learned that purpose isn’t always something you find. Sometimes, it’s something you have to create for yourself and that’s what I did with Healthqi. I created a space where patients are cared for entirely; body, mind, and spirit. I built it brick by brick with no roadmap, just the deep belief that this work mattered.

Now, my purpose is to provide care that treats the whole person, honors the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and creates a space where people feel safe, supported, and healed.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

At Healthqi Acupuncture, I support patients through TCM, using acupuncture, food therapy, lifestyle modifications, and related techniques to help them feel better, move better, and live with more ease.

The most exciting part of this work isn’t just treating patients and seeing real results, it’s all the unexpected opportunities that have come with it. I never imagined I’d be interviewed in 3 magazines or invited to present and demonstrate acupuncture at a shopping mall. It’s been amazing to see how much curiosity there is about TCM and I know even more opportunities are waiting in the future.

One thing I really want people to know is that acupuncture doesn’t hurt as much as they think it does. I like to say that it’s similar to a bug bite like a mosquito. This is one of the most common questions I get. When people hear “needles,” they associate needles with vaccine or blood draws and respond by instinctively cringing and dismiss acupuncture entirely. When really, acupuncture needles are completely different. They’re as thin as a strand of hair, nothing like a vaccine or blood needle. In fact, most of the time, people’s pain or discomfort before treatment is far more intense than the sensation of the needle itself.

Whether you’re coming in for physical pain, stress, sleep issues, or just trying something new, I make sure every appointment is thoughtful, clean, and tailored to you. While there’s nothing new launching at the moment, I’m excited to continue building on this foundation and welcoming whatever comes next.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three most impactful things in my journey were:

Resourcefulness
Willingness to be uncomfortable
Learning how to communicate

When I started Healthqi, I didn’t have a mentor or a clear roadmap. I was the first in my family to open a business, so I had to figure a lot of things out on my own. From setting up the legal side to designing my website, writing my own forms, and learning how to explain my services to people who had never heard of TCM. I found answers by Googling, comparing information, asking questions, and making thoughtful decisions along the way. That kind of resourcefulness, being willing to figure things out piece by piece is something I really value now. It gave me the confidence to build something from the ground up.

The second is being willing to be uncomfortable. I’ve had to push past a lot of challenges such as speaking in front of strangers, answering difficult patient questions, setting boundaries, and navigating moments where I didn’t feel 100% confident. Growth never happens inside your comfort zone and every uncomfortable experience made me more grounded and capable.

The third is learning how to communicate. As a business owner and practitioner, how I explain things matters, whether I’m educating a patient, posting on social media, or networking with other professionals. I’ve had to learn how to speak clearly, set boundaries, and communicate the value of what I do.

Advice for those just starting out:

1) Don’t wait until you feel ready because you probably won’t ever. Start, learn as you go, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
2) Be proud of your progress and celebrate small wins. If you don’t appreciate your progress, you wont see how far you’ve come.
3) Trust that you’re allowed to build your own version of success. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

The biggest area of growth for me in the past 12 months has been learning to stand my ground and strengthen my boundaries both personally and professionally.

I started creating boundaries a few years ago, especially during the rise in anti-Asian hate. That time really pushed me to stop letting things slide and to speak up when something didn’t feel right but in the past year, that growth has deepened. Especially now that I’m the owner of my own business. Being the boss means I set the tone and I’ve learned that honoring my boundaries isn’t just self-protection, it’s leadership.

Even though I’ve always been intentional about staying true to myself, I used to default to being overly accommodating or agreeable. I was kind but sometimes at the cost of my own peace. Now, I don’t feel bad for saying no when something doesn’t align. I’ve learned that clear boundaries allow me to protect my energy, make better decisions, and show up more fully for myself and my patients.
