Meet Purpose Destane

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Purpose Destane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Purpose , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I’ve been able to maintain consistency in my self-esteem and confidence by never being afraid to be myself. However, it became more challenging as I got older, because I realized I was unknowingly dealing with what I call CAWPT Syndrome. CAWPT is a “disease” that affects your performance, character, integrity, and more, all because you care too much about what others think of you.

I never expected to struggle with this, so when I finally recognized that I was battling CAWPT without even knowing it, I felt hurt, depressed, and sad. My daily goal has always been to be myself, no matter where I am, and I knew, deep down, that I wasn’t being true to who I am.

As we grow older, our self-awareness increases, and we realize that we can’t let these thoughts hold us back. You simply can’t move forward with CAWPT weighing you down.

The key is to just be yourself and trust that God has your back. As Proverbs 29:25 says, “It’s dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust God, you are safe.”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Wow, where do I even start? As you all know, in my last feature years ago, I was opening and managing a brand-new salon. After closing that chapter, I rebranded myself as a mobile and traveling stylist. Things were going so well until winter of 2022 when I got into a car accident that led to a long period of depression. Honestly, that’s why it took me so long to accept the panel invitation.

After the accident, my life shifted, and I began questioning everything. But when I look back, I realize that God had been providing for me and my business all along—it just wasn’t in the way I expected. I went from serving 30 clients a month to literally having just one client a month. I questioned my purpose, but God whispered softly to me, “I’m giving you time to work on yourself, and I’ll take care of the rest.” I’ve always kept my faith in the work I do, but going from 30-40 clients a month to just one was a wake-up call, even though it left me feeling both awakened and depressed at the same time.

But from this dark place, I gave birth to my first child, my son, Purpose Jr. I haven’t fully shared him with the world yet—just small glimpses here and there. I don’t feel the need to make a big announcement about it, and as I’ve gotten older, I feel that way about a lot of things.

Being a mom is tough, but the world we live in is tough too. So, with that said, it’s all hard. Both of my grandmothers used to say I stress like I already had kids—and now, look at me. 😂

During my pregnancy, I’ve been rebranding all my businesses and adding new ventures to my foundation. My hair company is now called Transformation Hair (because you won’t leave the same way you came), and my new foundation is called MTAPG—which stands for “More Than a Pretty Girl.”

Transformation Hair means so much to me. Doing hair transformations has always been my passion, and as the new year comes in, I’m planning to take things to the next level. I won’t give away too much just yet, but just know that I have a lot of exciting campaigns in the works, including partnerships with product lines and beauty companies. In the meantime, I’m rebuilding my clientele, so make sure you’re ready to book your appointments ASAP! 😌

MTAPG is a foundation created for every woman who’s struggled with embracing her inner strength, beauty, and faith. It’s hard to be that confident, God-fearing woman when you’re surrounded by jealousy and envy. Our mission is to give back and help women navigate this journey of beauty while breaking generational curses—mentally, physically, financially, and emotionally.

Last but not least, when I share my pregnancy journey with the world, I’ll be launching something BIG that day. Stay tuned!

Overall, I’m a brand new person—birthing businesses, launching new projects, and doing my best to maintain it all. Every moment is a blessing. 😌

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

One quality I’ve always recognized in myself is my love for people. As an entrepreneur, being a people person is essential.

Another quality I’ve embraced is my ability to handle both the good and the bad on my own. While partnerships can be valuable, I’ve learned that togetherness isn’t always necessary. I had to grow past the guilt of feeling this way.

Lastly, I’ve never been afraid to voice what I like and don’t like. I’ve always been open about my preferences, and over time, I’ve come to realize that it’s okay to maintain this quality while doing business.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’d like to start by joining more communities and carefully selecting partnerships, and new clients in new cities as well as building a strong board for all of my businesses. Right now, my focus is on mastering each role myself, so I can become a confident trainer and leader for my teams.
