We recently connected with R. Scott Edwards and have shared our conversation below.
R. Scott, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I started as most kids with paper routes, mowing lawns, etc; but when I was 10 my folks divorced (a big deal in 1965), and from that point on, I was working to help support the Family. When I was 15, I got my first real job at a pizza parlor (back then pizza parlors were bars…so a bit strange). In fact, it was so unusual, I was able to get my drivers license at 15 (Calif. age was 16 at the time) because I was working to help Family financially.
Anyway, I had many jobs and learned two things…1st, you need a good work ethic, and 2nd, I usually got fired wherever I worked; so at age 17 I started my own small construction company. That is a different story!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a life-long entrepreneur, I have started over a dozen companies and am basically a workaholic…Ha! My biggest joy in Life and in business is as a Producer. I have produced 1,000’s of live stage shows, several large concerts, and 3 TV series. I recently retired, and over the past couple years I have produced 4 podcasts, 3 for myself and one for a company. My main podcast has had over 250,000 downloads and is in the top 10% in the world for listening.
Bottom line, I enjoy producing shows (live, audio or video) that entertain people, and help them find the funny in life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
work ethic: So important, as these days this quality seems to be missing in many people. It takes hard work, goal setting, and that extra effort to find opportunities in life….and then take those opportunities and create something.
Be resilient and a risk taker: No one accomplishes something special or unique by following others or just working in a cubicle…you have to be brave (or stupid) and take risk, work hard, and strive for things others refuse to. Find what makes you happy and then share that with the world to make them happy. Whether you work for yourself, or for a Boss…be that person that achieves goals and makes the extra effort to benefit those around you.
Remember to have fun! : There are too many people who work just to make a buck and pay the bills….find what makes you excited to get up every day. Something that energizes you! For me it has always been Customer Service, Producing, and pushing boundaries; but whatever it was, I tried to have fun and enjoy Life. I have found that if i am successful and having fun, those around me succeed and enjoy life as well.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill, this early read helped me understand and communicate with people better. It is basically a “sales” book; but what I learned was to ask the correct questions and then “shut-up and listen”…the key to all successful salespeople. Once I gained people skills, I found that I enjoyed Customer Service because I was able to find answers and solve peoples needs. That can take many forms; early on it was in construction, then I helped people enjoy life and forget their problems with entertainment, and finally I helped people finding them the right vehicle for their needs, and finally in protecting their assets.
construction, DJ entertainment, comedy club chain, restaurants, art galleries, travel agency, fleet auto dealer, and insurance broker…. I skipped over owning a submarine and a beach shack in Hawaii, Ha!
