We were lucky to catch up with Rachael Dunbeck recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rachael, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I truly enjoy being artistic and creative. I want to be an inspiration for others because I have overcome a lot of obstacles. Such as having an absentee father and being badly bullied in school, which led to my being homeschooled from 7th grade through high school graduation. I feel that part of my issues in school were due to my being diagnosed with autism at the age of 9 and my social awkwardness, even though I did receive counseling. What works best for me when dealing with emotional issues or stress is talking about it to my very close friends and family. Also doing physical activity. For example, riding my bicycle around my neighborhood. The fresh air helps clear my head and boost my mood.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a multi-talented artist. My talents include singing, acting, modeling, playing the ukulele and guitar, and aerial arts. I have been singing my entire life and have always had a love of music.
I started aerial arts, acting, and modeling at the age of 9. I have been playing the ukulele for 3 years, guitar for 2, and recently began learning bass guitar.
I truly enjoy being artistic and creative.
I am looking forward to moving to Atlanta, Georgia soon for more career opportunities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
suggest signing up for different casting sites and applying for everything you qualify for. Additionally, try to make as many connections as you can through social media and other projects. However, do your research on the people you meet so that you know they are who they claim to be. Unfortunately there are a lot of scammers out there. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience.
Working with the right acting coach really helped me. He taught me the proper industry terminology, we work on character development, and ideas for improving my social media presence. Most importantly he was instrumental in my signing with my current talent agent. Additionally when starting out don’t turn down unpaid projects. You gain great experience and can make important connections.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Right now my biggest passion is wanting to start an all female pop punk band. Therefore, I am looking for a lead guitarist, a drummer, and a bassist. Please feel free to contact me, but only if you are serious about pursuing a career in music.
