Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachael Roach. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rachael, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
A major part of my work ethic has come from my mother and honestly, the struggle to survive. My mom worked very hard to provide me with great schooling and when things got difficult she never gave up.
Originally born in Jamaica I think many of us get a rep for having more than one job and I was no different. My junior year of college I got a job and I’ve been working ever since.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
If anyone told me 10 years ago that I would be baking and paying bills from baking I would have laughed. It was 2020, COVID had just swept the nation and I was working in a job that made me miserable. I turned to vegan baking as an outlet and because my favorite bakery closed down.
After numerous compliments, I ignored my imposter syndrome and started my business. Several viral posts and a review by the amazing Tabitha Brown had business booming! There were even talks of expansion and I felt on top of the world. Not even two years later everything came crashing down after a tumultuous domestic situation. My life and business had to be placed on hold as I worked to get myself on two feet.
As of June 2023 I am officially back to the baking business and blessing peoples tastebuds with great desserts! I’m so proud of myself for designing and launching my own website.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, drive and customer service skills heavily aided me in my journey. There are some days when things may be slow, but keep pushing. Lastly, always have great customer service. When there are hiccups (and there will be plenty) your customers will be more understanding and graceful if you provide them with great customer service.
Networking is the easiest way to learn these skills! Reach out to local business groups and other entrepreneurs. If you don’t know what to do those places will help you navigate the business world.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Being on a hiatus for two years has caused me to restart my clientele. In a country where almost everyone is struggling, trying to attract new business is hard. Adapting to ever changing content and algorithms can be very daunting.
