Meet Rachel DeSonier

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel DeSonier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

When I first started strength training several years ago, I was very often the only woman in the weight room at my gym. Things are (thankfully) different now, but when I started it was very intimidating because I was new, and often lifting wayy less than all the grunting men in there.

I would look for the equipment in the furthest corner because I just KNEW everyone was looking at me (spoiler: they weren’t).

I had to realize that I was falling for a lie. And I had to tell myself the truth: no one is looking at me, and I have just as much right to be here as any of these beefy men. It doesn’t matter that I’m a beginner, I’m a mom, and I’m not very strong (yet!), I have a place here.
Going into that space over and over and claiming that truth over myself resulted in a me becoming more confident and continuing in my weight training journey.
Now, I help other moms do the same thing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m a registered dietitian, personal trainer and mom of 5, who helps busy moms simplify weight loss and finally feel confident in their own skin without extreme diets or spending hours in the gym.

As a mom myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to balance family, work, and personal health-which is why I’ve built my coaching around realistic strategies that fit into real life.

What I think makes my approach special is that I don’t just hand out meal plans or cookie-cutter workouts. Instead, I teach skills and frameworks that empower moms to make confident choices on their own. It’s about creating consistency, not perfection-and that’s what truly leads to lasting results.

Right now, I’m especially excited about my upcoming training, How To Meal Plan To Lose Weight, running September 22–28. It’s a free, limited-time training where I’ll show moms how to create a 7-day meal plan that works for their unique life, includes foods they love, and saves hours each week.
My mission is to take the stress out of food and help women finally feel in control of their health.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three qualities that made the biggest impact in my journey were consistency, focus, and balance.

Consistency has been the foundation—showing up, even when progress felt slow or life was chaotic, is what built momentum over time. For anyone just starting out, I’d encourage you to forget about being “perfect” and instead ask, what’s one thing I can do consistently this week? That’s where results begin.

Focus has been equally important—especially learning to put my energy into the things that truly move the needle. There are so many distractions and shiny strategies out there, but that leads to distraction. My advice: identify your top priorities and give them your best instead of trying to do everything at once.

And finally, balance. Early on, I knew I didn’t want to burn out and always be “hustling”. Choosing balance-whether that’s resting on Sundays, spending time with my kids, or setting boundaries with hours worked per week-has allowed me to build a business and lifestyle I love. For anyone starting out, don’t buy into the myth that you have to sacrifice everything to succeed. Protecting your boundaries will help you go further in the long run.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Yes, I’m always open to connecting with like-minded business owners who share a passion for evidence-based wellness and helping people create healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. I especially value collaborating with those who lead with service first, while also protecting their own time and energy so they can show up fully for their families.

If that resonates with you, I’d love to connect. The best way to reach me is through email at [email protected].
