We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Hemphill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Rachel with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I draw my work ethic from my grandparents, who immigrated from China in the 40s with a dream of building a better life. They faced numerous challenges but were determined to succeed. My grandpa’s journey was particularly challenging; like many Chinese immigrants during that time, he was held at Angel Island, where he faced harsh interrogations and long waits to gain entry to the United States. However, through sheer hard work and perseverance, they managed to open and operate two grocery stores and a real estate brokerage while raising four children. Their dedication to their businesses and their unwavering commitment to providing for our family have instilled in me the importance of hard work, resilience, and the belief that with effort and determination, anything is possible. Their example drives me to never say no to any work or professional opportunity. I approach every task with enthusiasm, knowing that each experience is a chance to learn and grow, just as they did.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a fertility acupuncturist, I specialize in using acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine to support couples on their journey to conception. My practice is fortunate welcome our 1,000th acupuncture baby this year. This is truly a testament to the power of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in addressing fertility challenges.
I am deeply passionate about women’s health and empowering women to advocate for themselves within the healthcare space. I believe that every woman deserves to be heard and to make informed decisions about her body and her health. In addition to supporting women, I advocate for equality in the fertility journey, emphasizing that men also play an integral role in this journey. It’s crucial for both partners to take charge of their health, as their combined efforts can significantly impact their chances of conceiving.
Through my work, I strive to create a supportive environment where individuals feel empowered and informed, allowing them to navigate their fertility journey with confidence and hope.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey as a fertility acupuncturist, three qualities have been particularly impactful: resilience, empathy, and continuous learning.
Resilience: The path to becoming a skilled practitioner involves facing challenges and setbacks. Developing resilience has allowed me to navigate obstacles with a positive mindset. For those starting out, I advise embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Cultivating a mindset that views failures as learning experiences can be incredibly beneficial.
Empathy: Understanding the emotional and physical struggles that clients face is crucial in my practice. Empathy helps build trust and rapport, allowing me to provide the support they need. To develop empathy, actively listen to others and seek to understand their perspectives.
Continuous Learning: The field of health and wellness is always evolving, and staying informed about the latest research and techniques is essential. I prioritize ongoing education through workshops, seminars, and reading. For those early in their journey, I recommend setting aside time for regular learning—whether through courses, books, or mentorship. Stay curious and open to new ideas.
By focusing on these qualities and actively working to improve them, individuals can build a strong foundation for their professional journey and make a meaningful impact in their field.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I’m always open to collaboration and partnership opportunities! I’m particularly interested in connecting with professionals who share a passion for women’s health, fertility, and holistic wellness. This could include healthcare providers, wellness practitioners, researchers, or organizations focused on reproductive health and education.
If you’re someone who believes in empowering individuals on their fertility journeys, advocating for equitable healthcare, or exploring innovative approaches to wellness, I would love to hear from you. Together, we can create impactful initiatives that support and uplift those we serve.
