We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Pearson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
When I first started doing makeup professionally, imposter syndrome felt like an ever-present shadow. No matter how many clients loved my work, or how good I felt after seeing the positive reactions, there was always this nagging feeling, “Am I really good enough?”
Like many artists, I felt into the trap of comparison. Social media made it easy to see other makeup artists thriving, effortlessly creating flawless looks. Meanwhile, I was questioning every look I’ve ever done, every decision I’ve ever made about starting my own business. The doubt was loud, but deep down, my passion for makeup and beauty was louder.
When I was trying to figure out how to get started, I reached out to other artists for guidance-looking for a little direction, advice, or even just a word of encouragement. But I got nothing. It made me question myself even more. But instead of letting that get to me, I let it be a lesson learned. I focused on what I could control- practicing, learning, and showing up. I consistently showcased my talent to my followers, even when I doubted myself. I shared my work, my progress, and my passion. Over time, the consistency paid off. People started to recognize my skills, trusting me with their faces, and believing in my artistry.
What really helped me push through imposter syndrome was not only practice but also shifting my mindset. I stopped focusing on perfection and started focusing on my progress. Every face I worked on was an opportunity to learn, and a chance to grow for my business. Instead of dwelling on what I wasn’t, I started embracing what I was, an artist dedicated to helping people feel beautiful and confident.
The truth is, imposter syndrome never fully went away. Every once in a while, those doubts still creep in. But I don’t let it ever stop me, I remind myself of how far I’ve come, the people I’ve helped feel beautiful and confident, and the business I’ve built from the ground up. Today, I’m the owner of a growing makeup and hair business, working with amazing people and expanding into new areas. So, if you’re struggling with self-doubt, keep going. No one else can bring what you bring to the table. Own it, keep learning, and trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Rachel, a professional makeup artist and owner of Coastal Urban Beauty, a growing hair and makeup business specializing in bridal. Since a very young age, my passion has always been helping people feel confident and beautiful, and there’s nothing more rewarding than being part of someone’s special day.
What excites me the most about my business is the opportunity to work with clients of all skin tones, types, and ages, making sure everyone feels seen, celebrated, and flawless in their own skin. Coastal Urban Beauty isn’t just about makeup and hair; it’s about creating an experience where brides and their loved ones feel pampered, stress-free, and beautiful inside and out.
Right now, my main focus is expanding Coastal Urban Beauty, booking weddings for 2025 and 2026, and growing our team so we can offer full beauty services in Wilmington, the DMV area, and beyond. The journey has just begun and I’m so excited to see what’s ahead for us!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the 3 most impactful qualities in my journey as a makeup artist and business owner have been resilience, consistency, and adaptability.
Advice:
-Don’t take rejection or silence personally. Instead, use it as a fuel to keep improving. Seek out resources like online tutorials, courses, and hands-on practice. The more you refine your skills, the more confidence you’ll build.
-Whether it’s practicing new techniques, engaging on social media, or networking, consistency is what keeps you top of mind. Even if you’re not booking clients yet, keep showing up. The right opportunities will come.
-Stay open to learning. Take classes, study different skin tones and textures, and experiment with different styles. Also, don’t be afraid to step out of artistry and develop business skills, understanding branding, pricing, and customer service will set you apart.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I’m always looking to connect and collaborate with talented artists, especially hairstylists and makeup artists who are passionate. As Coastal Urban Beauty continues to grow, I’m focused on building a reliable, skilled, and professional team to help provide hair and makeup services for weddings and special events.
