Meet Rachel Taggart

We were lucky to catch up with Rachel Taggart recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I’ve always been a performer and in the performance arts. My father was a television director and producer and my younger brother is an editor. I came back to acting in 2019 and, being in a small market, decided that my next step was to direct and produce. I didn’t know then that this would become my purpose. I love building teams of people, collaborators, to work on a project that I feel passionate about: to encourage their skills and talents which will bring the project to life. While the finished film is always the goal, my purpose is to create it in a way and with people who I can lift up and bring along with me on the journey. The film is nothing if it hasn’t been made with the commitment, love and creative genius of all involved!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I founded Blue Egg Films with my husband and creative partner, Jon in 2022. Our mission is to tell crowd pleasing stories, whether they’re psychological horror, comedy, or powerful drama. We build collaborative teams and on camera talent and love working with underrepresented people.

Our latest film, almost finished in post-production is SOUVENIRS – the story of a woman detective who is on the hunt for a notorious serial pedophile. She uncovers a truth which threatens to blow up the case. This film has been a personal project and we’ve put in countless months to make the very best film we can with the resources at hand. We’re so excited about SOUVENIRS and can’t wait to get it shown at festivals.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think having a curious mindset, a collaborative attitude and working to be “ready” for what might come to you, so when it comes you can go for it. My superpower is bringing really talented people together to create films – and then getting out of their way so they can shine at what and how they contribute to the project. No ego! Being “ready” means that you’re always learning, looking for ways to improve and planning for what you want – so when the opportunity comes, you’re prepared. My company slogan is “Industrious, collaborative, ready” so my advice is – work hard (and smart) always be open to other peoples’ ideas (even if they don’t “work” for the project). Being curious will open you up to build on those ideas and may spawn further projects, friendships, collaborations.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

I’m pretty new to producing and directing and honestly, some specific people within my community have been instrumental in my growth and confidence as a producer and director. Molly Muse and Britt Harris of Paper Palace Productions have been early supporters – and their films spur me on to want to make meaningful and impactful films. My dear friend Sandra Scragg, a fellow director and producer (Grace Productions) has also championed me in so many ways. I learn from these women, we support each other and cheer each other on furiously! This is a fickle industry and can knock you down if you let it. It’s been so instrumental for me to have smart women, who know their stuff, in my corner. I can’t write this without mentioning my husband, Jon Harris. Jon has been THE most instrumental person in helping me build Blue Egg Films into a reputable indie film company, and me into a viable indie film director!
