We recently connected with Rachel Vigil and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
For 25 years I have worked remotely. I have always had a home office, even before it was acceptable. You have to stay focused and disciplined when working from home. Learning to block out distractions and keeping regular office hours is key. Honestly, the hardest part is when to stop working and walk away.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Travel has always been my passion. Owning my own Bed and Breakfast was my goal. Marketing is where I ended up after college, but then came along vacation rentals. This changed my career and brought me right into what I had always wanted to do, just slightly shifted. My husband and I bought two properties and turned them into short term vacation rentals. Through that process I stumbled across a marketing company that was giving free products to hosts. I signed up and suddenly found ourselves with a luxury mattress for our guests. I contacted the CEO and ended up working for his company called Showplace for 5 years. I was self-managing our properties while also tying in my marketing and hosting experience. Towards the end of last year, I branched off that service into my own company called UpClose Marketing. I work with brands that want a unique interaction with consumers, and I work with STR operators who love receiving free amenities. It’s a fun service to offer, and everyone benefits. As a guest walking into their vacation rental, they are always delighted with the free products to dive in and explore.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Open to change and taking a new path. I was laid off after 10 years working in marketing for one company. It was devastating, but also the best thing that could have happened.
2) Passionate – Part of my job is sales. My passion and excitement comes across to others. They can feel it and it absolutely helps to love what you do because then the sales part is natural and not forced.
3) Be proactive – Don’t wait to be told what to do. Take the initiative and speak up with suggestions. Just be ready to take charge with that extra work to implement. It will pay off.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Any host, property manager or short term rental operator should most definitely sign up at upclosemktg.com. It’s all free. For any brand looking to create an experience and trials with consumers, consider vacation rental product placement.
