Meet Rachel Wynn

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Wynn . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.

Hi Rachel , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome was very difficult for me to overcome in the beginning . In the beauty industry you want to be on trend and be apart of relevant conversation and styles and unfortunately it doesn’t leave much room for true creativity, or at least that’s what I thought. Even now as a MakeUp artist I purposefully try to stay away from trends just so that I can stand out! If everyone is doing soft Natrual looks, I am going to put out full glam colorful looks. As a nail tech if everyone is doing long nails full of charms and stones, I am doing the complete opposite! It really does help you develop your own skills and space within the industry! I also think one of the things that helped me was having a mentor to talk to and bounce ideas off of that truly allowed me to be myself. You have to have people around you that will encourage your unique abilities, support your creativity, and want to see something different! This is key! Some people love the robotic way the world has become so you have to surround your self with people who want different and don’t mind coming out of the box! Lastly I would say it all ultimately comes down to truly just learning to trust myself overtime. Often people tell you to niche down and pick a focus and that just never worked for me. I’ve always had many gifts and talents and when I stop putting pressure on myself to choose one, or to just be one thing, there was a freedom that came to me and i understood as time went on, that I am not this or that, but I am both and. This truly helped me break out of imposter syndrome

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Hi everyone my name is Rachel Wynn, and I am a Celebrity MakeUp Artist in Cincinnati Oh. I own THEE MAKEUP ROOM, in downtown Cincinnati, where we specialize in WALK IN glam makeup services. We also offer facials and waxing services such as Brow, Lip, Chin etc. At Thee MakeUp Room we have curated an environment that is relaxing and fun. Our clients leave out feeling amazing and looking even better. Our mission is to make makeup services easy and accessible without the worry of deposits and cancellations. Our Walk In business concept makes it easy for clients to know where to go to get their services without the stress. Having 20 years of experience in cosmetic and makeup artistry has definitely allowed me to make a name for myself in this space and to consider myself a true expert. I have an amazing mentorship program that helps beauty professionals build and structure their businesses called THEE BEAUTYPRO and we will be launching our Beauty Of Business Podcast this Fall!
I am exxites to share here exclusively as well that we are launching our retail area this fall with the launch of my cosmetic line called OMAI (oh-may) Beauty. OMAI is a blackowned cosmetic brand that strives to drive creativity and confidence through the art and power of makeup! Our brand will merge the worlds of skin health and cosmetic together creating a link between the 2 worlds. I am a big believer that good skin is the beginning to great makeup! We are so excited about the launch and the celebration of our 1 year anniversary taking place this September! Our retail area will celebrate independent cosmetic brands that are local and fabulous! Just call us your mini Sephora or Ulta but for independent cosmetic brands! We so excited for this!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think for me I really had to learn to trust the process and not rush things! You are going to make so many mistakes on this journey of life and entrepreneurship and you have to know that it’s ok. There will be days you don’t feel like it and you will have to over rule your feelings and become disciplined. I truly believe that success is built by what you do consistently. Truly it’s the most underrated skill you have to develop in business.
If I had to pick a 2nd I would say remain a student! Stay learning your field and your craft! Not only are things consistently changing in the world in general but I find taking the posture of a student helps me keep my passion for what I do. Read books and articles once a day on your field and try to apply the information to your life or business.
Lastly I would say learn to take a break. Give yourself permission to not be “ On” all the time. Take your self care time serious and incorporate into your schedule. Don’t find the time, TAKE the time to unwind and turn your brain off from all the things you have going on, this helps to prevent burnout and creates some sort of balance in your mind!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed I literally shut everything down and I get to a place of quiet! Often times I have learned that feeling is really anxiety and I need to take a moment and simply breathe!
On good weather days I will grad a coffee from Starbucks and find a body of water I can look at and just absorb the sun and allow myself a moment of doing absolutely nothing! Music always helps me too but it’s definitely about getting quiet and resting your mind for a moment. Walking also helps or exercise in general. I do find it most effective as well to do it by myself, it just allows me that space to be me completely me!
