We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raditia Lasry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Raditia, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I love this question because I never realized how easily this came for me until I had conversations with people about the weather and other inconvenient circumstances, where I saw a silver lining. My optimism comes from my upbringing. My mom and dad both had a very positive way of looking at things and coping with everyday challenges, illnesses, and my dad’s passing.
It comes so easily because it’s a muscle I’ve practiced for as long as I can remember; it’s even easier when I’m around people who reaffirm those experiences.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The values I put in my work are based on sustainability, connection, and community.
Community is the easy one. From our friend group to our work relationships, there are ample communities to which we feel connected—places where we feel at home and don’t have to change who we are.
Connection makes being human unique, not only the connections we make with familiar surroundings, especially the unexpected moments with strangers. My joy comes when I connect to someone I won’t meet again in the future, and hold a conversation where I learn something about the person.
Sustainability in mindfulness will support and enrich our lives for the better. No matter our experiences, from sorrow through joy, there is a way to stay present with the dis- and comfort of our lives. Being able to sustain that practice and strengthen that muscle will make it easier to live a life of joy.
