Meet Rae Mason

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rae Mason a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rae, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
In my teenage years, I got into a relationship that masked itself as love but soon revealed its true, abusive nature. Silenced by fear and shame, I kept the torment hidden, enduring not only physical but also mental and financial abuse. At 17, I found myself entangled in a web that seemed impossible to escape.

Amid the chaos, I faced an additional challenge – an unplanned pregnancy. No one knew that I was in this relationship and out of fear I had an abortion. Looking back, the chaos was my normal and I had found comfort in an uncomfortable situation.

Nine long years of this toxic relationship brought more than emotional scars. Health scares, such as potential cervical cancer from an STI called HPV, haunted me. Stress became a constant companion, manifesting as insomnia, anxiety, depression, and gut issues. My body struggled to heal because it was in constant survival mode, never resting even in my sleep.

Yet, a whisper within me insisted that this wasn’t normal. Despite the depth of the hole I felt I was in, I literally fought my way out of that relationship. At the age of 26, I found the strength to break free. I was completely broken but thanks to my dad I found the strength to not give up. With newfound determination, I sought the guidance of a health coach. The very first thing that my health coach gave me was hope and that was enough to push me forward!

Through this transformative journey, I discovered the power within me to heal physically and emotionally. Most importantly I found GOD and my identity within Him. It was not an easy path, but the hope instilled by my health coach became the catalyst for change. Today, I stand as a testament to resilience, having used my pain for purpose. I’m stronger and wiser for it all. My story is a testament to the strength within, the ability to overcome even the darkest challenges and rebuild a life filled with self-love and newfound purpose.

I created what I call the ABC’s for how to reboot after abuse. A stand for A- awareness of self :

“Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don’t align with your internal standards. Why you behave the way you do, what are your beliefs, what are your limiting beliefs, what are your triggers and trauma, what are you likes and dislikes, what are your strengths/weaknesses, and what are your values.

B stands for Become:

This comes from the Be, Do, Have concept by Stephen Covey in a book called 7 habits of highly effective people.

This Concept focuses on the Character of the person. This is an inside out job vs an outside in job. When you focus on what you can control you become the person who can Do the Thing in order to Have the desired result.

C stands for clean:

The body keeps the score. Meaning that unhealed trauma, the old waste, and the stagnant emotions are trapped in you and affect your daily life. It doesn’t matter how much time has gone by if you haven’t intentionally cleaned your home it’s still going to be dirty? Right?! Does time clean a house? No!! so if you aren’t intentional about cleaning your body it’s going to be dirty.

I believe the phrase “time heals” is a lie. Time doesn’t heal. The actions that you take within time can heal. This is where you begin to detox your body and your environment.

When you ABC your life the D will follow and that’s your desired results!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Personal development is huge! This isn’t a one time thing but a lifetime journey. Becoming aware of yourself in every way possible is vital to your overall growth. You can do this through coaches, books, therapy, and personal development conferences. You have to have a constant curiosity about everything YOU! You have to ask yourself questions to get to know yourself.

Next I would say to develop an attitude of gratitude. Just the simple act of focusing on what I’m grateful for and why has enhanced my life. It’s that saying “wherever your attention goes energy flows” and that’s so true. The quickest way to get more of what you don’t want is by focusing on what you don’t want. This has been scientifically proven.

Last but not least has been my personal relationship with GOD. This is an ongoing journey. Developing this personal relationship has been the most impactful on my physical, mental, spiritual, business, and financial health! Getting to know more of who created me helps me to understand more of who I am and the power within me. This has completely shifted my identity! Instead of attaching myself to any person, place , thing , or title which is all temporary I’ve attached myself to something much Bigger and Eternal. This has allowed me to be rooted in an identity that is unshakable.

If you want change and growth you need to first make a decision! You need to decide in your mind what it is that you want. Being ready isn’t a feeling it’s a decision. Take time to sit down and write out your values, top 3 goals and your why behind each goal. Then right what action steps need to be taken for each goal. You need to see this everyday. Within whatever you wrote you will find that it will require personal development, an attitude of gratitude, and spiritual guidance. Don’t be discouraged by small steps because they add up like compound interest. One step at a time because all the beauty and fun is in the journey. Use all of your experiences to push you into a higher version of yourself and to help others.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love collaborations! I’m looking to collaborate with podcasts, fitness coaches and other healthcare providers who offer different services than me, co-working spaces, corporations and anywho who would be interested. I’m open to seeing how we can add value to each other! I host a two hour workshop called Reboot: How To Heal Your Gut Holistically and if this is something you want to share with your audience then you can contact me at [email protected] and take a look a my website at Www.thehealthymoveco.com
