We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rahkim Sabree. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rahkim below.
Rahkim, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from filling a need both internally and externally. Internally that looks like recognizing the parts of me that need to be saved–because no one is coming to save me. Externally that looks like being an example of representation for those who have sacrificed before me and those who are coming after me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a financial coach who employs methods of financial therapy and financial counseling to help people understand their personal financial psychology and identify financial trauma. Many people in the financial literacy space fall short in focusing solely on what I like to refer to as the tactical side of money by way of financial education, but aren’t aware of or don’t focus energy and effort into helping clients see how their financial psychology and relationships with money impact behavior and decision making. I’ve focused quite a bit of time on becoming a thought leader on the topic of financial trauma and specifically how it shows up and impacts Black Americans. In 2023 I was awarded Best New Personal Finance Content – Written and People’s Choice Content Creator- Written through the Plutus Foundation for my newsletter on Substack “Overcoming Financial Trauma”, and I was awarded the Outstanding Community Outreach Leader Award through the Financial Therapy Association for my work in being a driving force to making financial therapy mainstream.
My business model incorporates both B2C and B2B arms currently where I focus on working with clients 1:1 and I focus on partnering with organizations to provide fractional financial counseling and financial consulting services on behavioral finance and financial wellness. With the winding down of 2023 I plan to decrease my focus on the B2C side of my business and focus exclusively on working with organizations to provide greater reach and services that can be subsidized by contracts and grants. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Remaining coachable, Self confidence/ Faith, and Empathy are three skill areas that were most impactful in my journey. I have a mentor who always says “There are levels to this”. What most don’t realize about each new level is that there is a new set of problems to solve and obstacles to overcome at those new levels. My advice for folks who are early in their journey is to find a mentor whose values align to your own, continue to build confidence and faith in who you are and your purpose on your journey, and practice empathy not only with others on their journey but with yourself as you grow in yours.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love this question! I’m always looking for folks to collab with especially in furthering the mission of financial therapy. I’m looking to partner with other credentialed financial and mental health professionals. CFP’s, LCSW’s, LMHC’s, LMFT’s, CFA’s, CFT’s, AFC’s, PHD’s, the list goes on and on. I’m also interested in partnering with decision-makers and policymakers with access to grant or research funding so that I can build out programs, support groups, and curriculum, that allows me to practice and educate on the topic of financial wellness, behavioral finance, money and mental health, and financial coaching.
