Meet Rahul Suresh

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rahul Suresh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rahul, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

when you keep doing something, even when there are days you don’t feel like doing it. That’s when you feel the purpose. To me cinematography and directing became my purpose by doing it, with repetition, error, pain and struggle. the craft started to be more for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am an Indian cinematographer and director who has started his own movie house called missedmyshot, which focuses on commercials, music videos and now even movies, based in Los Angeles. Currently I am trying to grow my business by working with up and coming brands and artists to share their voices, I am also working towards my third short film look at me. The growth of my brand is important because I think its a style that im am bringing to the world that has never been brought by an Indian citizen, the style is a blend of my growth in India and Bahrain and now the western side of the world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Travelling, helped me a lot. I have always been an observer, so seeing people and places and art can help you grow as a human being, which I think is very important to being an artist. Also just creating small videos, helped me a lot. I try to create as often as I can, without thinking about the budget, or all the complex things that can slow you down. I just pick up my camera and call some friends and I go shoot things. this has helped me become a better director, cinematographer and editor. Don’t care about the budget, go and create especially in the beginning. Now I am able to ask money because I did that for many years before I could be in the position I am currently in.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I want to work with generous people and people who care about quality. I care a lot of the videos I make, I put my life into them. I cannot do something for the sake of doing it, I believe this is what all big brands hold onto. this standard, so I want to work with people and brands who hold that standard, and are willing to invest in that standard.
