Meet Rakym Mccarthy

We recently connected with Rakym Mccarthy and have shared our conversation below.

Rakym, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I asked myself, “what else would you be doing at this time in your life other from doing music” at the age of 18, sitting everyday on the block, chilling doing the regular roll ups and meditation, going to work everyday doing a job you don’t like, and that’s when it hit. I got up the exact same moment and went to built a beat. My work eithic came from an ultimatum, then it became what do I want for myself, even when I got into recording artists and mixing and mastering songs, it became more of do it because your are necessary and me searching for that sound that is an extention of myself. It’s the drive and the passion that got me into rooms that I’ve never thought i’d be in, and being around people who I look up to. Then I became obsessed, nothing else in the world matters, hunger didn’t do much, being outside and interactions became the least, I just want to do what I love the most. I know I want to do something great, with that comes experimenting, taking on more work, being open to new ideas and also getting up and doing it everyday.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Maestro940, I’m a Producer and Audio engineer, I record artist, build beats, mix and master songs and produce music. The most exciting thing about doing all of those is growth for me, taking on new challanges, and working with other producers, engineees, artist and musicians. If you need recodings or your songs mixed and mastered you can check out Y.C.I Productions on google, that’s my business page, or simple @maestro940 on Instagram for your inquiries.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think some of the most important skills you should have on your journey are having good judgment and being attentive to everything that your apart of. Making the right decisions helps a lot with knowing where your going forward, and being aware also helps to keep track of your time, people, your assets, your moves. But most importantly, be honest, like radically honesty, because what ever you do or say will shape your surroundings. Letting people know where they stand without filtering can help them become better, giving your honest opinion will dictate things to move in the right direction, so don’t hold back, even if it cause faces to turn. Read more about human interaction, “know thy self”, discover more, create a foundation to stand on, so that you’ll never forget who you are, always expand your knowledge. That will improve those skills.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

To me it is better to be well rounded, improve those areas that you are not as strong in. It keeps you relevant when you have some understanding of a trade, a software, that technique the clients are looking for, it opens opportunities. They are times that I have to face where the strenght I have with my Digital Audio Workstation (D.A.W), Studio One, can not be as useful because the client has Protools at their studio. I was not inclined to learn other D.A.Ws because I didn’t want to stray from where I had the most room to show my capabilities. But getting to learn Protools maneuvering with it over the years has helped a lot. It has gotten me more work, and I became more flexible. Still not a big fan, but from I get my set up right, I can take on the tasks.
