Meet Ralph Exilus

We recently connected with Ralph Exilus and have shared our conversation below.

Ralph, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

It Often can be difficult being the minority in any room, but I honestly feel like that’s a blessing in disguise. Most people may see it as a disadvantage but knowing I’m the only person like me gives me a creative edge and a point of view that the other may not have. Taking my experiences, traditions and story can breathe new life into anything I’m doing which makes me an asset to whatever I’m doing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hello my name is Ralph Exilus and i am many things which’ includes a designer, creative director and businessman. I’m currently running a luxury design label called “HOMMAGE Dior”. I started about 6 years ago in my mother’s church, but like most it was a hobby or a passion project at the time. About 1 year ago I decided to get serious about what I consider a side project. Since then it’s been nothing short of a blessing to be doing what I love.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

3 skills that was super helpful for me in the beginning, I’d say are Networking, Confidence and Mentorship. Mentorship wouldn’t really be considered a skill but finding someone who has walked the path your currently trying to walk is essential to your success. Being that the person already went through the good the bad and the ugly, it could avoid a lot of problems that most face early on in fashion.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Having different outlets, or something you can pour your energy into other than the brand. For me personally I love the fashion industry but I also have passion for other things(sports, stocks, family time). With these other passions I find refuge from the stress the brand can sometimes cause. Also finding different outlets can also translate to your creative process. Being able to bridge the gap between different worlds is essential what being creative means to me.
